Constant In Need of Change

Loose vague ramblings
are maybe all I'm
capable of today and tomorrow
I'll think instead of focus,
on the sounds from outside in.
Discipline now to drag my
tired self down these steps
and closer to the display
because it means something
or I might find something
and because if I don't I'll
hold this grudge against me
for yet another year.
On a night like this, in the
midst of all the pops, snaps,
the blues, reds and greens,
the shriek of bottle rockets,
the smoke filling the air so dense
anyone can wonder if its really
from the show or someone's rooftop
caught in danger by flame.
In the morning all will be silent,
for that night, and the next
So right now the only constant
I see rests high above the streetlight
across from where I stand.
A quarter-full of silver that pulls
and plays to emotion with a force
that can bring awe and so inspire,
at other times such force can break
down all defense, my walls collapse
against the thought of some
unnamable tragic thing, some
uncertainty, some dream
I can't remember or haven't yet
realized, some constant, the same
constant of needing change.
