A revision of an earlier poem

Come and lay with me my love
Here beneath the sunlit apple blossoms
In the thickness of the grass;
Set aside your fear of losing me
If only for awhile

Let us listen to the humming
Of the honeybees
As we lay here silently
Watching clouds sketch
Playful portraits against
The canvas of the sky

Let the memory of this day remain
Come this time next spring
When I am in my place of rest,
Remember how we’d lie for hours
Taking in a symphony
Of crickets scattered through the clover
Here beneath the sunlit apple blossoms
Reminiscing of times less somber

Come and lay with me my love
And think not of tomorrow
Hold me close against you
Forget that I am frail,
Close your eyes,
If only for a moment
And remember me as once I was
Not so long ago
And let me savor
The sweetness of your mouth

Come and lay with me my love
