Poseidon's Legions
by Hanley (Doc) Harding

Saturday, August 04, 2007
Rated "PG13" by the Author.

A dedicatory to the Navy SEALs...

                              Poseidon’s Legions

...we
the razor tips of his great Trident, were feared

...those
who moved through darkness and murk with the purpose
of killing all who would not submit to their will,
   found such to be true

...those
who sat about small dung fires espousing the rhetoric of necessity
of wholesale management of human slaves at any and all cost,
   found such to be true

...those
who skirted the mainstream in their
petty efforts
at amassing personal wealth and power,
   found such to be true

...they
thought we, who saw and moved and fed
through the stinking syrup night at our pleasure,
   were demons

...they
   were right;
   but, for them, it doesn't matter any more;
from them, we extracted the ultimate price for their sins

...we
   Poseidon's legions

[Oh, man... I really hate to give an itinerant Limey troubadour credit for some good advice on editing this poem... but, thanks goes to my good friend, Peter Benson. Doc]

I am drawn to the water, this poem grabbed my attention to realize that the water is home to some very brave souls.
Thank you for this aquatic poem! Really loved your words.

Powerful, but polish it.
Just as I got into the fine line rythmn and the "found such to be true" you change the whole structure. Actually, to be forward here, I'd combine the last two stanzas and make them the first.
e.g.
...we, Poseidon's legions,
the razor tips of his great trident
we were to be feared.

Then you can remark on those who "found such to be true."

Just a suggestion.

Navy seals are are very dedicated, rare breed of man. Too often kept hidden in the background never to receive the devotional praise they so duly deserve. Your piece brings this out and I thank you.....

Be safe,
Karen
