It’s There
Copyright 2013, J. Joy “Sistah Joy” Matthews Alford
It’s there
That part of you that came from her
And her before
Through God
His plan proclaimed
Before you were named
Before you were born even
That you’d be a mom
You were prepared
At the dawn of eternity
To be and do
All that was needed
And more
Yes, you gave it your own spin
From your first smile
And toothless grin in your mother’s arms
To the day you held your own
And fell wildly in love
Just as generations before
You loved, adored
Learned, taught, fought,
And cried
Oh how we all cry
For mothers have found
That tears are often the only answer
You found the journey to be amazing
And like all mothers before
You discovered what unconditional love is
It’s there
That part of you
That humbly acknowledges
How very blessed you are
That cherishes
And celebrates
And handles the heartaches
Along with the immeasurable bliss
Of this wondrous thing call motherhood
Yes, it’s there
That sterner stuff
And the amazement
And even the fear
Along with the confidence
That intuitively
Or incredibly against all odds
Empowers you
To figure it out despite the fact that
At times, you don’t have a clue
You only know
Your child is depending on you
The blessing is that over time
Those times become few
And somewhere along the way
You learn to pray
You grow to know
That power from on high
Is unconquerable
That when you partner your path with God
Nothing is impossible
It’s there
Inside you
In your DNA
Like an infinity mirror
You carry that thing
That is
Yes, it simply is
With no exception or qualification
It says
You were selected
By divine assignment
With no needs neglected
You were given
All that is required
And more
To become a mom
