My Grandfather

I Dreamed of my grandfather last night.

I dreamed of him how I've always known him, proud, strong, hard working and kind.
I dreamed we were riding in his old Ford pickup, traveling back in time.

With the windows down I could smell the summer mix of flowers and weeds that the country road to the farm knew.
He drank his coffee from a thermos lid and when he finished he reached over for his pouch of chew.

I watched with young eyes as put the leaves in his mouth and with a gesture that he noticed me he extended his hand.
I reached and grab a leaf or two feeling, proud and strong as inside the boy grew a man.

His lessons to me were often of few words but each one molded the man I am today.
I long to go back to be taught but one last time by the giant of the man with not much to say.

But all I can do is feel sad as he is gone, his lessons taught, his time here expired.
I dreamed of my Grandfather last night but this time no tears fell and I awoke with a smile.

I realized he had given me one last lesson of life and love that had to be learned through the pain of death and crying.
That if you hold someone you love tightly in your heart, then they will always be with you and a part of you, even in dying.

Still remember my only grandpa lived in a nursing home with a stroke for15years. Visited him most every Sunday as a child. Died when I was13 and am now 63. Memories of him come back to me often. Of course, he is buried in cemetery where my second hubby is now lying resting in peace too. Grandpa always gave me a 50 cent piece or a silver dollar when I visited. Loved him very much. Was so lucky to have him. Great poem about yours and I can relate to it very well. They are never forgotten and always with us in spirit.

I feel honored to have been given the pleasure of meeting your grandpa, through your well penned portrait of him, in such eloquent phrase.

Makes me think of one of mine posted a few weeks ago entitled "Gransma's Kitchen"

Nice work!

Dear David,

This is an extraordinary poem. This captures the love that was so evidently given from grandfather to grandson, and shows just what an impact some people make in our lives, without our knowing at that particular moment. It's all too often that the realization comes years later. Keep the thought in mind that although his vessle is gone the spirit lives on !!! and he is always besides you.

Warm hugs my friend

Dave,
Glad your grandfather came to visit you in your dream to release the pain and sorrow, and to remind you of the wonderful memories that you had together. They never really leave us.
There is nothing like the love and strengh that family brings to us, is there?
Blessings,
Judith
