Sharing a poem from upcoming book...and...

Q & A
by Irving A. Greenfiel

I want to know why I do it?
What drives my need to write?
Fame?
Fortune?
Neither is in striking distance of my pen
any longer, or if they ever were I blindly passed them by,
or they passed me by for reasons of their own.
No use to rail at La Fortuna.
I wrote and still write without knowing why.
But with each finished piece, like a craftsman, I step back
and take pleasure in what I’ve crafted.
It’s mine,
has my hallmark written into it;
within its scope, it’s my world,
a creation like no other,
a love like no other,
a marriage like no other,
and often enough a misery like no other.
Yet with all of this, I still lack the answer;
but the question no longer matters.
I do it.

I feel exactly the same way Glenda. Very nicely penned. The very fact that someone, anyone enjoys something I wrote is an amazing reward in itself.

Wise words, indeed!! I recently wrote a mini-essay in response to a request for "Why I write" pieces. When you get right down to it, I spent a lot of time and energy saying what you are saying, only in approximately 450 words too many. Still, like you, I relish the process and take pride in my placing my stamp. Not that I can help myself! Thank you for posting this, Glenda. Well-done!! :) Phyllis :)

Glenda, I suppose most of us write because we have too, and
some with great skill, as you demonstrate here. -gene.

Absolutely on the mark. Do any of us know why we labor so? It's enough to see the finished product and then go on to the next. Loved it. Thanks for sharing.
