Arabian Market

Walk into the market place.
Look into each smiling face.
Listen to the noisy chatter.
Beware of the persistent patter.
Remember all the ancient fables.
Then think of all the many labels
That we place upon these people
From our high and lofty steeple.
See them working, see them playing.
Many times you’ll see them praying.
See the woman cutting skins.
When they bargain, guess who wins?
See them cut the meat in pieces.
Careful, ‘cause it’s you he fleeces.
Watch him when the scales go down.
Best to wear a constant frown.
If you think the fish is smelling,
It’s not fresh though he’s not telling.
Hear the gently buzzing flies.
Don’t you listen to his lies.
See the fruit so neatly placed.
With a problem you are faced.
Which to buy, how much to pay.
Certain sure you’ll not make hay.
Even though the sun is shining,
It’s his pocket you’ll be lining.
See the carrots, cauliflowers.
Onions piled in little towers.
Peppers hot and lettuce green.
Marrows fat and long string bean.
See the goats who clear the ground
Of anything that can be found.
See the ragged little boys
Adding to the general noise.
Creeping up and softly pleading.
Looking like they need some feeding.
Look again and see life teeming.
You could even think you’re dreaming.
Lost within an ancient world
Long before the bomb was hurled.
