Dry desert heat – on and on for weeks
Wild fires thrive and acres turn to ash
Irrigation ditch-water keeps lawns and hay fields alive
But this New-England transplant feels withered and desolate
On the sultry breeze, heavy, humid
Moisture laden atmosphere, looming gray and ominous
Thunder rolls and the warm wind
Sends clouds, pregnant with moisture, directly overhead
A few drops tease - the horses in the field turn away and huddle close
Softly, in the now muggy air, a rain shower begins
My soul is refreshed in the wetness off the downpour
I am cooled and feel alive again
The wet earth smells musky from years of supporting livestock
So much like the farm of my free-spirited childhood
I am alive again and my spirit will flourish
Rain, life giving rain, has replenished and given reminders of freedom and joy
