“The more one gets to know of men,
The more one values dogs.”
Alphonse Toussenel
It sadly doesn’t pay
To be very heroic, today
We now disrespect our heroes
These days, in god-awful ways
This very courageous canine hero, was shot
Five times, attempting to protect his humans
Then hauled off as, ‘home invasion evidence’
In excruciating agony, that no one would end
His jawbone had been shattered by a bullet
Another bullet had severed a nerve in his leg
Three more gunshot wounds, covered his torso
The shelter was ordered to ‘just medicate’ his pain
This heroic dog lay in agony, for ten long days
Then authorities ordered, that he be euthanized
He was no longer needed as ‘evidence in a crime’
And his family couldn’t pay for surgery, not a surprise
The estimated surgical costs, were above $6,000
So, this brave dog’s family relinquished their rights
For his utter bravery and loyalty, to our human race
Being ‘put down’ in a crowded shelter, was his plight
But thankfully, a few compassionate souls stepped in
And, he was taken to a rescue organization, for surgery
His wounded leg will most likely have to be amputated
And stories such as this, bring such utter sadness to me
This very heroic canine has now been named ‘Champ’
And, he’s now joined the ranks of too many homeless pets
Most of us love to proclaim that ‘Dog is Man’s Best Friend’
But we’re far from achieving ‘Man is Dog’s Best Friend’ yet
It’s just doesn’t pay,
To be very heroic, today;
We now disrespect our heroes,
These days, in god-awful ways.
And please provide support to,
Your local animal rescue groups;
Besides them, very few even care,
About today’s animal heroes, so true .
