The Hypnopompic state of sleep (that period of semi consciousness preceding waking) can sometimes be the most alive parts of the day, especially for the aged who might be searching for new life.

Borrowed Time
Pre-sunrise Central Park
rain and wind
chorus with zoo residents
a cacophony of memory’s pastels
swirl about
beginning to awaken
the jungle’s beauty
rousing distant mountains of glass and steel
their windowed lanterns alight
yawns of refuse trucks awakening
parroted screeches of early morning “Taxi!”
storm drenched newspaper blankets
remain stuck to benches
holding fast someone’s homeless night
all but gone

Such are the previews of the day’s coming attractions
the lucid dreams of experience relived

Just a little more time
Just a moment more?

Yes, these images crowd my waking moments, too. However, just yesterday, I was awakened to find myself smashing my head on the dresser and my body hurtling toward the floor. Fortunately, I only cut my head a bit and landed on my knees on a soft rug. That waking moment was all too real and I couldn't get back to sleep until time to get up. Fortunately too, this never happened before, even though I've dreamed of flying off the bed many times and didn't do it.

Everything that we experience in those in between states is just fascinating and makes it even more difficult to define reality. Vivid rendition of a slippery condition.

you've just entered my entire night never
mind the hypnopompic period, i float perpetually
between what and what and am never sure what is;
well captured, Odin, a difficult theme

I'm quite old enough to have these images floating throughout semi-consciousness in my pre-weakefulness, but truthfully about all I ever remember is the image, or rather the notion that I have to pee.
