Memorial Day

We Know
By La Belle Rouge

I didn't fight that awful war
I didn't see men blown to bits
or sleep in rat infested bunkers
for several months at a time

I didn't pick up dead and wounded
or hear the cries of dying men
I wasn't there alone on the runway
with an M50 during the tet offensive

But I know the price you paid
still pay, in your body, in your mind
because I paid it too, as have
thousands of military spouses

some made the ultimate sacrifice
some have been sacrificing a lifetime
thank you, all of you, for your service
I hope some, and one day all, find peace

Yes La Belle, we know... those who are on the other side of the stone or crypt where our brace men's bodies lay.

Thank you, they made the ultimate sacrifice and for the reason I wrote A Picture on the Pillow

Hi La Belle. This is a wonderful way to remember all brave service men and women and their families.

My grandfather became American citizen in 1915, then he proudly served in WWI. My father was in the Merchant Marines and sailed around the world for eight years during WWII.

It's a hard road to travel–life after war. And you have traveled that far more than I. Let's hope that soon these kinds of experiences will never happen again.

Can those of us who didn't, ever know the price paid by those who did? Likely not, but this timely piece certainly paints a portrait of just how awful it must be. Thanks Belle. Dick

This is so true, we all too often that it is not only the service men and women who pay the price for our continued freedom but also the wifes and families of those left behind...God bless them all.

Don't hold your breath about the peace coming, Belle. Would that it could descend upon us tomorrow, but it seems the smarter we become the better our weapons to kill become and the survival of mankind is seriously in doubt.
