World Peace
I know it’s just an old cliché,
The kind of thing that people say
From Beauty Queens to Presidents and Priests,
A worn out sentiment at best
That never will come true I guess,
But wouldn’t it be good to have world peace?
If everyone that breathes Gods air
Should stand and suddenly declare,
“From now on we are going to love each other,
Whatever colour, creed or race,
Whatever religion they embrace,
We’re going to treat them all like they’re our brother”,
No more aggression, no more hate,
No more war, wouldn’t that be great?
No more need for bullet, bomb or sword,
And the money that we spend on these
Could then be used to cure disease,
Now isn’t that a goal to work towards?
If the fortunes spent on planes and ships
And the weapons with which they’re equipped
Were spent to irrigate our barren wastes
So the people starving there today
Could grow such things as wheat and maze
And drink fresh water that they knew was safe,
And the billions left, could fund research
To rejuvenate our planet Earth
Or repair the damage we have done at least,
Famine could be a memory,
Confined for ever to history
If only we could just achieve world peace,
Just think what mankind could achieve
If only we could all agree
To put aside our differences and talk,
And not to blame each other for our ills
Or use the past as an excuse to kill
For the world today is everybody’s fault,
What parent anywhere on earth
Does not believe their children’s worth
Is equal to or greater than their own?
How many would not do their best
To ensure the future happiness
Of every loved one they have ever known?
Yet those who rule cannot conceive
Of a world perpetually at peace,
And until they do, the cliché must remain,
That is unless the rest of us
Unite and say, “Enough’s Enough”,
For only then may we still see a change,
Only then might we still see
Our children live in harmony
Free from pain and prejudice and fear,
Free from the global nuclear threat
That still threatens to destroy us yet,
For we all know that Armageddon’s near,
Yes I know it’s just an old cliché,
The kind of thing that people say,
Not really believing that it could come true ,
But is it me? Am I insane?
For believing that the world can change,
Or are there more that feel the way I do?
That a lot of love and a little trust,
Can change the fate of all of us,
From the North, the South, the West, and of course the East,
For understanding is the key
To uniting all humanity
And the only hope we have to gain world peace.
