When tragedy strikes (Wisconsin) I find myself turning to the Zen of music for hope and trust in the world.

Have You Ever Thought...

To allow
The Miles
The Evens
The Coltrane
And Mozart
Of your soul
To run free

Have you ever
Experienced such visions of sound
Shroud the deepest of depression
Bring forth
The glory of a smile
The norm of a 4-5-1 progression
All twisted up
Into a new tonal gravity of 2-5-1

Oh
To find tomorrow's version
The 21st century stroke
Across the canvas of sound
The Philip Glass
The Sombient Collection
The Avro Part wink at Botti's trumpet
While Krall swoons a lyric
And Clapton reminds memories back then
Harold Budd saunters into a wispy alert
As John Adams cements his sound
While Max Richter explores
Lest we forget origination

Mose Allison gets his licks
Pat Metheny serenades distant echoes
While Pink Floyd bashes our senses
Roger Eno lulls our anxiety
Schoenberg and Webern bring us to attention

How much in music changes?
Is it but less change
And more embellishment
Of
Bach
Mendelsohn
Bartok
Stravinsky?

As humans
Are we not
After all
Merely melodies of another kind
Being discovered?

Have you ever thought
How essential music is
To one's heart beat
To one's echo of silence?

I can see why you needed to retreat. I must confess that while I grew up with music on the car radio, listening to whatever the DJ picked out and enjoying almost any kind of music, since television came out, I have never listened to music.

However, I have many times headed out to some quiet place by the river and listen to the sounds that nature produces, mostly calls for identification, protection, and sexual intrigue. I still enjoy that music the best. Especially in the evening, when the owls began to hoot and the alligators strum that deep bass blues.

Mose / Coltrane / Country (old country) I go to to alleviate something troubling in my thoughts, or to add to the happiness when I am glad.
