She played my heart like Spades
Every card I drew ... trumped
Oh, sure
The cards were marked
I think they came that way
She just learned the marks; memorized them

Defeated at every turn
I squandered my fortune of emotion
And any edge I ever had
Bet it ALL on her;
And lost

But... the pot was there for the taking
I could never sandbag very well;
No poker face on me;
Always wearing my heart on my sleeve
The cards had long been stacked against me

Then you came to the table
You sheltered me and called my bluffs
Never asking questions -- you knew every card I held
Never once assuming anything -- you knew every rule
No presumptions; no pretense -- your cards were always spades
Ever encouraging me -- teaching me how to trump the Trumps

Your heart was fire in every move
My sanctuary... found at last
You shielded me as partner from the start
And led my hand to treasures I would have never known

I sought asylum in the wisdom of your play
From persecution I had known in so many games before
And you showed me your hand without reservation
And shared your life's hard-learned lessons with me

I was unprepared for your brutal honesty
And blinded by the losses of my past
You won my heart with deftest sleight of hand
And taught me wily ways I'd only dreamed of

Until you graced my life,
I was never victor in the game
Always locked outside the winner's circle

You braved my lack of understanding
Brought me to newfound success
And in your subtle teachings,
Removed the damning lock with those three words
And gave to me yourself,
The grandest windfall
I could ever hope to have.

Nice use of metaphor, smart use of simile and intelligent pacing making the piece flow with increasing dramatic vigor! The ending seals it all: the confessional tone and the admission of Love... Great writing, Jeff!

Remarkably well written. I like how there are no periods for the punctuation but there are semi-colons and such. It is smooth and clean. I like the cleanliness and it's very sweet and tender. Good job!! I really liked it. It's not choppy either. Smooth and sweet.

Like a twilight of candlelight is shining upon a barely lit room. That's what it reminds me of.

In Prayer, Brittany
