Hello. I am Lakeisha McKnight. I had to pause a moment and share with you all my journey of becoming a writer. I am still developing as a writer. I do not believe that there is a perfect writer. I do believe that we are always going to be in the state of 'becoming' a great writer.
I can remember my younger years while in elementary school. I would write with a creative mind. I loved reading. I believe once I realized I enjoyed reading that it sparked my imagination. Even at this stage, I did not have a passion to write. The seed was there, however.
I would have great scores on my writing essays in school. I did not have a problem typing a paper or an essay. Sometimes I felt that I used to write too much. As I progessed throughout high school, I noticed that I became detailed in my writing. On occasion, there was too much detail and I would have to make my essays more concise.
It was when I entered college, Pennylvania State University, that I really begin to explore writing. I wrote poetry to expressed how I was feeling in the inside. In some of my writings, I would poor our my soul. I loved doing that to be able to connect with others.
Writers such as Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes and Toni Morrison inspired to continue writing. As I reflected upon their writers, I begin to believe that all things were possible once I put the pen to the paper. I then decided to send one of poems to contest. The poem, Virtuous WOmen, was soon published inside of VoiceNet Anthology.
The writers above and my strong beliefs in God inspired me to become more of an inspirational (empowering) writer. Now, I am sold out of the belief that I was created to do many things and writing is definitely one of them. My niche is to target youth and others who are downtrodden to become empowered to be their very best.
Thank you for taking the time to hear my story of how I got started writing. As God pours golden nuggets of wisdom within me, I will share them with you.
Stay tuned...THE BEST IS YET TO COME!!!
