Short Story
Each toll of the Church bell pounds her body. It was so loud…she wishes it would stop.
The bright light was stabbing through her closed eyes. The cacophony of sound nearly overwhelms her. Jets flying overhead, shots firing in the background and those bells, still ringing. They echoed through the Virginia valley and the canyons of her heart.
A shadow comes between her and the bright light. She lifts her eyes in time to see the Captain give one final salute as he handed her the folded American flag.
