(Through the thoughts of a child one year or younger.)Just because children under the age of one can not talk they do hear and think as we do. If they could only let us know in other ways.
Anticipation
Mama was sleeping on the couch and a strange noise came from her mouth every time she breathed in. The big people call it snorking I think. She has bad breath too, whew! I wasn’t sleepy any more so I decided to go hunt down George the Cat. Walking wasn’t my style of transportation yet so I just crawled, swiftly and effectively I’d say…boy I used some pretty big words for someone that could barely speak in any language, wouldn’t you say! It must have been that meat mama fed me for dinner. She told me it would help me grow up strong and healthy, so I must already be growing to be using big words like that. Well, where is the cat?
George wasn’t anywhere near the couch so I thought that I should look for him near the kitchen where he would be drinking his milk. Oh, look at that, Gruffy is looking at the front door. That’s funny, I didn’t hear that ding dong thing. Wonder what he’s up to, I better go see. I don’t know how fast I got to Gruffy because I can’t tell time yet, but it was REAL fast! I think there are rug burns on my knees from brushing the rug. Gruffy didn’t even move when I came near him. Pulling his tail didn’t make him move either. I got up on my knees and hung my self around his neck until I fell to the floor. Gruffy continued to stare at the door. Now he began to whimper and move in circles. I just sat and watched him look like a stupid whinny.
George decided to snuggle up to me while we watched Gruffy run into the living room. George pushed his soft head into my tummy several times and when I didn’t do anything he just pranced away. I thought that I had better follow him since he was headed in the same direction as Gruffy. We all ended up in the living room at the place the big people call a fire place. I know it; I know the answer why it’s called a fire place. Dad always makes a fire here to warm the room, and us of course. That’s weird, there sure is a big light coming from that fire place. There is no fire. I hear singing, I…I think there was even some grunting sounds, just like Mama makes when she’ pushing the furniture around. I looked over to the couch, she’s still there making those strange noises. She was choking Beary! I scuffled over to rescue him…he was still in one piece, no rips or tears, just a limp neck. I put his limp neck into my mouth like Gruffy did with his little ones and I hurried over to that fire place area. WOW! The light was brighter and the singing louder! Boy, this singer was terrible. How could he sing one of Mama’s songs and every other word was humph! Well when ever this person gets here I’ll just have to tell him about the way Mama sings that Christmas song.
The singing was indeed getting louder until after the last humph we heard… *&#>?#*…! Oh my! Mama doesn’t use those words. Suddenly there was a lot of commotion so Gruffy, George, and I, as well as Beary, decided that we had better get a better look. We couldn’t see a thing because the light was soo bright, but we sat there and watched up the chimney to see if any one would come down. Who knows how long we sat there looking up that brightly lit fire place area and I never did get to see anyone. I woke up next to the fire place with my head on a tiny pillow with Beary in my arms while Gruffy and George lay next to me. There was a nice warm fire in that fire place area and Mama was still asleep making that funny noise. There was sunshine coming in from those giant windows in the living room so I knew that it was morning. Under the tree I saw all sorts of presents, oh my! I wonder where they came from?
