She screamed and fought, after several weeks of trying I still couldn't get her to

Zar tells his story.

Lane told me how she had come to
be here. She felt the need  for a getaway after a failed romance.A  place no one would know her, or bother her.
Alone on a quiet beach in a foreign land  Her friend knew the perfect place
But  what was about to happen to Lane
Could only be described as a fantasy
Still it was as real as reality can get
Even though she didn't know it yet.

In Germany on the Baltic, a rented cabin At quiet magnificent Heiligendamm beach She couldn't believe her good fortune Thankful for her friend who found this place
She seemed to be alone most of the time Except for an occasional passerby.

Until  I sat next to her one morning
She later told me she thought me striking,  quite, handsome I  introduced myself in a deep soft voice"Hello, I'm Zar,I see you here every day. Do you mind if I sit awhile with you?"she stared into my eyes I got lost in hers.

She took her time speaking," I'm Lane, I guess it's okay" she said , trying for nonchalance I said,"I can tell by your voice you are an American, how long are you going to be with us Lane?" She said " Yes I amAmerican, your accent isn't as clipped as most Germans. I'll be here for a month." He answered,"You are observant, I'm from Austria, but I live here now, quite close by. I was going to invite you for tea."

I could tell she felt a strong attraction, yet uneasy about going to a strangers house for tea. She told me she had other appointments. I looked at her with skeptical eyes and said "Perhaps another time then Lane. I'm well known around here you can ask anyone about me, maybe I'll stop by again tomorrow." With that I got up to leave, and she said" It was nice meeting you Zar."Then she too got up and left. She was very attractive  shoulder length natural chestnut wavy hair, Deep dark brown eyes, a captivating smile, and a nice figure petite and a bit plump, but very nice.

The next time I saw her she admitted asking   the owner of my cabin about me and he said"Oh yes he is a fixture here, a very quiet man. He is a writer, of Anthropology and Oceanic books and stays to himself. Some think him an enigma, but a good man, he is away a lot."

Over a few days I convinced Lane to go for a swim with me, and gave her a mask to dive with. She agreed, but didn't know I would take her down so deep. She stuggled and passed out, but I got her to the hidden cave  where I also live . I managed to lay her down, and undress her.  I took her swim suit wisps of her hair,  to a far part of the beach near where she was staying. then let some ripped pieces of her swimsuit and hair float to the rocky crag nearby where she would swim and  sit on the rocks.

Then I  went back to the cave drugged  her while she was still asleep and locked her in.  Over time I had worked to make my cave as comfortable as possible in the time I had before shapeshifting.  I had decided to live there and try to find out why and how this had happened to me.I had fixed a  bedroom with seaweed, driftwood spongelike  filling, and had brought sheets towels clothing wrapped in a plastic  waterproof  bag along with other items to make things more comfy.

I had a storage room which was now filled with food essentials, and everyday I'd bring fresh items that I liked. I had good refrigeration from a water pump I rigged with a cooler from the bay water on the back side of the cave. I had all the bathroom neccessities a mirror and all other   needs  I kept a supply of bottled water.   For  elimination needs,I had set up a place outside the cave, by an overhang.  I had porta potties and used the boat to haul waste away to a nearby dump

I sat down to have a cup of tea, thinking back to when it all had  happened.   I was doing some research underwater for a book,  diving where there was said to be a sunken ship treasure. In the process I became disoriented. I tried to rise but got weak and drifted almost passing out. I saw a dark cavelike opening and managed to swim to it, and that's how I found the cave. I was exhausted but went in far enough to be able to take off my mask and get  some oxygen. I fell asleep and when I awoke I tried to get up and saw that I had a serpent body. I thought it was a dream or vision of some kind, when I realized I was awake and it was me inside this form I became horrified at first.

After about half an hour I decided I must try to find out what had happened, but how? I finally decided to leave the cave and when I slithered out I became myself  again, now really frightened, I had to get back to the cave and get my mask, but suddenly realized I no longer needed it. I rose up to the surface and swam to where my boat was.

It was still where I had left it so I started the motor and headed for shore where the pier was. After tying my boat I  hurried straight to my cabin. When I got in and looked at myself in the mirror there was no change in me. I stripped and got in the shower examining my body it was unchanged. Afterwards I put on a pot of coffee and took a large brandy and drank it in one gulp. I stood there shaking with the memory of seeing myself as a serpent. I had no idea how a dream or vision could be so real.

This was the beginning of my strange dual  life of shape-shifting. I have been doing it now for just over  a year, half the time underwater in my cave
as a serpent, and on land in my cabin as a man. No one knew or had yet discovered my secret. I  decided it was time to have a mate. When I saw Lane on the beach always alone, I knew she would be the one.

I hoped my plan worked and that when Lane   was declared missing and was searched for they would find what I had planted. I was not surprised when they finally did, a few weeks later and  put the story together that she had last been seen on the beach and must have gone in the water and drowned. There were dangerous riptides at times and it wasn't unusual for strangers who weren't careful to have such a result. After a week of searching and scouring her cabin and things, they finally declared her missing and most likely drowned.

My plan was for Lane to be my mate, both here and at my cabin. However if she put up resistance, I would keep her locked in the cave. the only problem is I didn't know how to make her shapeshift. It  worked for me once I was in the cave, sat down and meditated into an altered state. As soon as I left the cave I was back to being a man again.  I went to look in on Lane and she was still  asleep. I gently awakened her.

She screamed and fought, after several weeks of trying I still couldn't get her to shapeshift to a serpent. I kept her locked in her room while I was gone, but she had everything there to eat, and for comfort. bath neccessities and  a porta potty.

We had some talks together, and she begged me to let her go. She was terrified when I became a serpent. Even though she admitted I was a beautiful serpent golden and pleasant. She couldn't think of a way to describe me. She had said as a man I was very handsome and had deep soulful eyes that matched my golden hair and she didn't know why I would want to be a serpent, if I could help it.

I told her that I had to keep trying to find out how it happened to me, and why it was only in the cave that I was a serpent. Also, why didn't it happen to her too. It was something that challenged my expertise as an anthropologist, and I was writing a book about it. Of course it couldn't be published until I discovered how and why the change took place.

I had come to like Lane and hoped we could become mates. I told her if I could trust her, I'd take her out of the cave to my cabin where we could be like man and wife. That I would do all I could to make her happy, if she would just cooperate. She was too afraid of me to try. I was hoping in time to change her mind.

This night I came to the cave, Lane was crying to leave. I put her in her room, and became a serpent to enjoy the thrill of being different, it was a high for me, I moved around the cave enjoying myself and suddenly there was Lane.  She came walking towards me with a weird smile on her face. She had learned how to use the knives to unlock the door. She knelt over towards me and I was mesmerized by her eyes, then she pulled a huge butcher knife out from behind her and slashed at me. I didn't respond quick enough and I was injured and bleeding profusely, I hissed, trying to shapeshift and talk, she laughed maniacally and  I ..............................................

Watching the horrible serpent die as I slashed it one last time taking its head off. I didn't think in terms of it also being a man called Zar.I couldn't believe I had finally done it. I went where he kept the brandy and took a few gulps from the bottle.I was breathing heavily and beginning to feel frightened of what I had done, and didn't know what to do next.

I was shaking and walked back to where the serpent body was , but it was almost gone, I saw it fading away a bit at a time and watched horrified not knowing what might happen. When it was completely gone, I slumped to the floor, unconcious.

When I awoke I was dizzy and felt like I was squinting I wanted to feel my face but I didn't seem to have any hands, then I saw that I had the body of a serpent, all I could do was scream repeatedly, but no sound was heard , just a barely audible hiss.

As Sandie so rightly noted, it was a surprising and satisfying twist in the tail (no pun intended). However, in literary terms, I don't think the girl suffered enough. In other words, you might have built the tension to a higher level before releasing her. Nevertheless, a good read.
Thank you

Wicked twist of a shapeshifting end to this great story. Hooked this reader from first sentence to last.

an interesting story with an original plot. I'd focus on "showing" more and "telling" the reader less. You tell us about the woman's feelings when we should know them by the way she's acting, the things she says. And I'd include a little more sensory data, like what it feels like as limbs slough off, melting like hot wax, as legs fuse and new muscles form. Really take us into the pov of the snake an let us "feel" the cold bloodedness of it, the lack of eye-lids, let us use our tongue to taste sounds in the air. There no description of pain as a knife cuts into flesh. On what it feels like when a snake slithers through water. etc... It's a good story, but could be tightened up a little.

This is quite deep and aquatic. The snake is my spirit totem. In India, the goddess Vinata is the mother of snakes and a symbol of water and the underworld. Snake bracelets and jewelry are said to represent sexuality. I think Zar carries himself as being very sexual and manly, and the kundalini was aligning with him and Lane in a past life. This is coiled in a spiritual, sensual quest. Eileen, this is a very hypnotic, transforming piece. It makes your audience take the form while reading it. Very captivating. Wonder what a full chapter on this would read like?

There would've been a time that I simply would not have read anything on this page because of the picture. ;-) As a little girl I was deathly afraid of snakes. I'm saving this to read again. It's a doozie on the brain in the best of ways!
