Dr. Pingletons Great Adventure a short Story By Darryn John Murphy

Dr. Pingletons Great Adventure

Mr. Pingleton had a poodle its name was strudel. No one really knew why Mr. Pingleton had called his dog strudel. Perhaps it was his favourite food.

While looking out the window he thought to himself about how lovely the evening was. Then he turned to strudel and said, “it’s getting dark outside shall we go for a walk?” Strudel barked with a loud yip! So up they got and off they went.

The moon was high and the stars shone bright. Look at all the pretty lights. One was blue while another was red and one looked like it was sown together with a piece of thread. Then they saw a sudden flash in the evening sky “did you see that strudel?” “A shooting star.” All strudel had seen was Miss Vanderhart’s cat and with that they were off over the hedge and through the bushes while Mr. Pingleton called out in earnest for strudel to come back right now. He was much to tire the chase strudel around. Plus it was almost time for bed.

Miss Vanderhart screamed and strudel came running back. Sorry Miss Vanderhart it won’t happen again and so the two headed home. Once they got home Strudel hoped into his basket ready to go to sleep and Mr. Pingleton turned out the lights and said goodnight and headed for his own bed.

Early the next morning the telephone rang. “Hello,” he said, “Hello Mr. Pingleton, it’s the hospital again it seems Mr. Peterson has been up till morning light, and has given the nurses quite a fright.” “Ok then I’ll grab my coat and hat and be there soon.”

A short time later Mr. Pingleton arrived at the hospital, “hello doctor he is over there.” “Thank you nurse.” “He thinks he’s a shell, or maybe just maybe he’s under Miss Winterbournes spell.” “Or maybe nurse he’s a little unwell.” “Well I guess only time will tell doctor.”

“Hello Mr. Peterson, how are you?” Mr. Pingleton asked. “Pickle my grandmother and tickle my toes, Will you look at that I can even touch my nose,” “Have you been up all night doing this Mr Peterson?” “I think I have, you could be right.” “Perhaps you should go to bed for a while and don’t forget to turn out the lights.” “I think I will rest for a while I wouldn’t want to lose my smile.” “Sounds like an excellent idea Mr Peterson.” “Goodnight then,” “Yes, goodnight doctor.”

While I’m here nurse I may just check on Mrs. Winterbourne and see if she is doing.” “Ok doctor she’s in the sitting room.”

Hello Mrs. Winterbourne how are you today? Hello Dr. Pingleton I’m drawing a kart but the problem is it just won’t start. May I take a look I might even be able to help? I see the problem you’ve forgotten to draw in the key. By gees I think you have got it; shall we go for a ride? That would be splendid and such a delight. Doctor, Hold on to your hat hold on to your locket and with that they took of like a rocket. Down the hall past the dispensary doctor can you feel the intensity? Around the corner they go. Look out for old Mable watch out for the table with a loud crash around the next bend they go. Thank god that was the table and not old lady Mable. Watch out for that crack, look out for that cricket. Oh that cricket, He gets on my wicket.  He keeps trying to tell everyone he suffers from Rickets. Oh Dr. Pingleton I forgot to add sprockets my dear Mrs. Winterbourne we’re not trying to build ourselves a rocket. There not enough room with this entire ceiling. I bet the others would really be reeling if we blasted the top of this ceiling.

Doctor Pingleton look at all this mess. Nurse call it therapy, it was for the best. Come along now Mrs. Winterbourne you need to rest. I’ll go check on marble she could be under a little distress.

Hello Mable you’re looking stable. Yes Dr Pingleton unlike the table now Mr. Peterson has nowhere to make labels. Well I think it’s all for the best. As we all know Mr. Peterson needed his rest. Plus we were only giving him a test.
