Old Maddy...The Village wretch...Her screams could be heard...The Villagers thought her a bit insane...

The night was foggy
Earlier I heard the screams
Those of Old Maddy
She swears to have seen a ghost
Afraid of her own shadow
Refusing to leave her cottage
The villagers believe the old wretch
A bit insane
Others believe her to have seen
The spirit of Caleb O'Mally
Walking on the knoll
The old legend of Ireland
So told by the villagers
One night Caleb O'Mally
Went looking for his wife Kathleen
Earlier that evening
His step son appears at his door
Drunk out of his skull
Swearing to God
Kathleen lies in the stable
Naked in the arms of another
Caleb O'Mally order his step son to leave
After speaking of Kathleen in disrespect
Telling him to never step a foot there again
Caleb enters the cottage in sickness
Waiting for Kathleen to come
Hour pass
The night was coming forth
The fog coming in
Caleb decided to walk to the knoll
Where the stables were
He had been there earlier in the dawn
Splitting wood
With a lantern in his hand
He walks toward the knoll
Coming toward the stables
He could see a dim light in the loft
He stood quietly
Waiting to hear if anyone is there
Suddenly he heard two voices
He recognizes only one
His Kathleen
She utter
He takes her away from Ireland
Pleading her love for him
Caleb O'Mally it was said
Lost his mind
He waited for the two to leave the stable
Standing outside the door
With a sickle he beheaded them both
Leaving them there for the buzzards to feast
Folk lore say
The following day Caleb O'Mally
Burn the stable up on the knoll
He died a year later of grief
Of his Kathleen so told
He walks the knoll
In search of her
Again Old Maddy's screams
Awaken me
I dressed to go check on her
When I stepped out the door
There on top of the knoll
Stand a man in the fog
It was then I knew
Old Maddy
The old wretch
Spoke the truth
For
There stood the spirit of Caleb O'Mally

Wonderful ghostly tale my friend, this reminds me of the legends and myths that my grandmother used to tell us when we younger. Oh my when nighttime fell, it was something...all of us would hear the cries of whoever the story was about, just knowing that they were lurking outside our windows. I love how you grab the reader at the beginning and lead them through quickly with no wasted words, strong right to the very end! Enjoyed!
Blessings,

Eerie yet enticing right to the end, as it grips you from the beginning and winds you through the sad story of lovers scorned left to mourn. Wonderful Deb.
