Bible songs that children love
There are some wonderful songs that teach Bible stories and passages. At the River
Traditional hymn adapted by Aaron Copland
Words echo Revelation 22:1
Shall we gather by the river,
Where bright angel’s feet have trod,
With its crystal tide forever
Flowing by the throne of God?
Yes, we’ll gather by the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river,
Gather with the saints by the river
That flows by the throne of God.
Soon we’ll reach the shining river,
Soon our pilgrimage will cease,
Soon our happy hearts will quiver
With the melody of peace.
Yes, we’ll gather by the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river,
Gather with the saints by the river
That flows by the throne of God.

Daniel Prayed
G. T. Speer
I heard about a man one day who wasted not his time away.
He prayed to God every morning noon and night.
He cared not for the things of Baals. He trusted one who never fails.
Oh, Daniel prayed every morning, noon, and night.
Chorus: Oh, Daniel served the living God while here upon this earth he trod.
He prayed to God every morning noon and night.
He cared not for the king's decree. He trusted God who set him free.
And he prayed to God every morning, noon, and night.
They cast him in the lion's den because he would not honor men,
He prayed to God every morning noon and night.
The jaws were locked and it made him shout, and God sent all them safely out.
Oh, Daniel prayed every morning, noon, and night.
Chorus –
Now brother, let us watch and pray like Daniel did from day to day.
He prayed to God every morning noon and night.
We too can gladly daring do. The things of God he'll take us through.
Oh, Daniel prayed every morning, noon, and night.
Chorus –
Recorded by Soup Kitchen Gospel on their album, Stirring It Up.

Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel?
Traditional African-American Spiritual
Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel,
Deliver Daniel, deliver Daniel?
Didn't my lord deliver Daniel,
Then why not a every man?
He delivered Daniel
From the lion's den,
And Jonah from the belly of the whale,
And the Hebrew children
From the fiery furnace,
Then why not every man?
Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel,
Deliver Daniel, deliver Daniel?
Didn't my lord deliver Daniel,
Then why not a every man?
I set my foot
On the gospel ship,
And the ship it begin to sail,
And it landed me over
On Canaan's shore,
And I'll never come back anymore.
Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel,
Deliver Daniel, deliver Daniel?
Didn't my lord deliver Daniel,
Then why not a every man?

Go Down Moses – traditional African-American spiritual
When Israel was in Egypt's land
Let my people go
Oppressed so hard they could not stand
Let my people go
Go down Moses
Way down in Egypt land
Tell old Pharaoh
“Let my people go”
“Thus spoke the Lord” bold Moses said
Let my people go
“If not I’ll smite your first born dead"
Let my people go
No more in bondage shall they toil
Let my people go
Let them come out with Egypt’s spoil
Let my people go

He shall feed His flock like a shepherd
Handel’s Messiah
He shall feed His flock like a shepherd; and He shall gather the lambs
with His arm, and carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those that are
with young. (Isaiah 40:11)
Come unto Him, all ye that labour, come unto Him that are heavy laden, and
He will give you rest. Take His yoke upon you, and learn of Him, for He
is meek and lowly of heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

Never will slumber nor sleep
The Lord your keeper is

The Lord will protect you from all evil
He will preserve your soul
The Lord will protect your going out
and your coming in from this time forth
And even forever more

Jehoshaphat - "Fear not, neither be afraid, the battle is not yours"
Music by Mary Ridgway, lyrics by Charlotte Colley Schmidt.
On the CD, Sing and Shine and on the tape God is ...Up, Down, All Around
When Jehosphaphat was Judah's king
they followed all God's ways.
His judges knew they judged for God--
They gave God the praise.
So when his neighbors joined as one
Jehoshaphat to fight
the faithful people turned to God--
God always made things right.
They knew God is all-powerful.
And so they joined in prayer
As they prayed together
God's word came to them there.
Fear not, neither be dismayed
At all the multitudes or weapons they've displayed.
Fear not, neither be dismayed
For the battle isn't yours, it's God's.
The next day when the battle came,
The people all agreed
They chose the best of singers
Who would the army lead?
So all the good king's people
Were led to war with song.
The enemies ambushed themselves
Until they all were gone.
As the Lord had told them
when they turned to Him in prayer.
Because they always loved the Lord
His help was always there.

Joshua fought the battle of Jericho - African-American spiritual
Joshua fought the battle of Jericho,
Jericho, Jericho,
Joshua fought the battle of Jericho,
And the walls came tumblin' down.
You may talk about your kings of Gideon,
You may talk about your men of Saul,
There's none like good old Joshua
At the battle of Jericho.
Up to the walls of Jericho,
He marched with spear in hand.
"Go blow those ram horns",
Joshua cried,
"'Cause the battle is in my hand".
Then the lamb, ram, sheep horns
Began to blow,
Trumpets began to sound,
Joshua commanded the children to shout,
And the walls came tumblin' down.
That morning
Joshua fought the battle of Jericho,
Jericho, Jericho,
Joshua fought the battle of Jericho,
And the walls came tumblin' down.

Little Moses - folksong
Away by the waters so blue,
The ladies were winding their way,
And Pharaoh's little daughter
Stepped down to the water
To bathe in the cool of the day.
And before it was dark,
She looked in the ark
And found a sweet infant was there.
And before it was dark,
She looked in the ark
And found a sweet infant was there.
Away by the river so clear,
She carried that beautiful child
To his tender mother,
His sister and brother
Little Moses looked happy and smiled.
And she called him her own,
A beautiful son
And sent for a nurse that was near.
And she called him her own,
A beautiful son
And sent for a nurse that was near.
(alternate words for the verse above)
His mother so good did all that she could
To rear him and teach him with care.
His mother so good did all that she could
To rear him and teach him with care.
Away by the sea that was red, so red,
Little Moses, the servant of God,
Before hymns subsided,
The seas were divided,
As upward he lifted his rod.
And the Jews safely crossed,
While Pharaoh's host
Was drown-ded in the waters and lost.
And the Jews safely crossed,
While Pharaoh's host
Was drowned in the waters and lost.
Away on a mountain so high,
And the last one that he ever might see,
To Israel victorious,
His hopes were most glorious
He'd soon over Jordan be free
And his spirit did cease,
He departed in peace,
And rested in the heavens above.
When his spirit did cease,
He departed in peace,
And rested in the heavens above.
Sung by Lisa Redfern on the CD, I'll Sing You to Sleep
Chords available in Folksinger's Wordbook
Words vary from version to version. Recorded by a variety of artists.

Love never fails (1st Corinthians 13)
Words adapted by Mindy Jostyn & Jacob Brackman
Music: American folk tune
(Concept inspired by Hal Hopson's "Gift Of Love")
From CD, in His eyes
Though I may speak with the heat of fire
And have the power to inspire
But have no love, I may as well
Beat a rusty drum, blow an empty shell
Though I may know all there is to know
And prophesy how the world will go
But have no love, then lost I am
My words are vain as grains of sand
Love is not proud, makes no parade
Love keeps no score. Love is not afraid
Love always hopes. Love always hears
Love never fails, never disappears

One More River - camp song
(Also known as "One Wide River")
Old Noah built himself an ark,
One more river to cross,
He built it out of hick'ry bark,
One more river to cross.
Chorus:
One more river,
And that wide river is Jordan,
One more river,
There's one more river to cross.
The animals came one by one,
One more river to cross,
The elephant chewed on a bun,
One more river to cross.
(Chorus after each verse.)
The animals came two by two...
The elephant and kangaroo...
The animals came three by three...
The monkey, flea and chimpanzee...
The animals came four by four...
The hippopotamus got stuck in the door....
The animals came five by five...
The bees came swarming from the hive...
The animals came six by six...
The hyena laughed at the monkey's tricks....
The animals came seven by seven...
Said the ant to the elephant, "Who you shovin'?"
The animals came eight by eight...
They hurried past 'cause it was late...
The animals came nine by nine...
Old Noah shouted, "Cut that line!"
The animals came ten by ten...
And then the voyage did begin...
They never knew where they were at...
Till the ark bumped into Mt. Ararat....

Pharaoh, Pharaoh
(sung to the rock tune of Louie, Louie)
Chorus:
Pharaoh, Pharaoh,
Oooooohhh baby,
Let my people go,
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah (2 times)
Well, the burning bush told me just the other day
That I should come over here and pray.
I got to get my people out of Egypt's hands
And get them across to the Promised Land.
I said: (Chorus)
Well, me and God's people coming to the Red Sea
And Pharaoh's army's coming right after me.
I took my rod, stuck it in the sand
And all of God's people walked on dry land.
I said: (Chorus)
Well, Pharaoh’s army's coming out there too.
So what do you think that I did do?
I took my rod, and I cleared my throat
And all Pharaoh’s army did the dead man's float.
Chorus: 4 times

Silver and Gold Have I None

They met a lame man on the way.

In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,
rise up and walk.
He went walking and leaping and praising God,
walking and leaping and praising God.

The Lord's Prayer composed by Larry Groce
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

The Lord's Prayer - West Indian folk melody
Our Father, which art in heaven,
hallowed-a be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
hallowed-a be thy name.
Done on earth as it is in heaven,
hallowed-a be thy name.
Give us this day our daily bread,
hallowed-a be thy name.
And forgive all our debts,
hallowed-a be thy name.
As we forgive our debtors,
hallowed-a be thy name.
Lead us not into temptation,
hallowed-a be thy name.
But deliver us from evil,
hallowed-a be thy name.
Thine is the kingdom, power, and glory,
hallowed-a be thy name.
Forever and ever,
hallowed-a be thy name.
Amen, amen, amen,
hallowed-a be thy name.
Amen, amen, amen, amen,
hallowed-a be thy name.
This hymn is in both the United Methodist (271) and Presbyterian hymnals.

The Lord is my Shepherd - camp song
sung in a round
The Lord is my Shepherd
I'll trust in Him always.

I'll trust in Him always.
Always, always,
I'll trust in Him always.

The Lord is My Shepherd by Larry Groce
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul:
he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:
for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

There Were Twelve Disciples
Sung to the tune, Bringing in the Sheaves by George A. Minor
There were twelve disciples Jesus called to help him:
Simon Peter, Andrew, James, his brother John,
Philip, Thomas, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus,
Thaddeus, Simon, Judas, and Bartholomew.
He has called us, too. He has called us, too.
We are His disciples, I am one and you!
He has called us, too. He has called us, too.
We are His disciples, I am one and you!

This little light of mine
Music by Harry Dixon Loes
Refrain:
This little light of mine,
I'm going to let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm going to let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm going to let it shine,
Ev'ry day, ev'ry day,
Ev'ry day, ev'ry day,
Gonna let my little light shine.
On Monday, he gave me the gift of love;
On Tuesday, peace came from above.
On Wednesday told me to have more faith;
On Thursday, gave me a little more grace.
On Friday, told me to watch and pray
On Saturday, told me just what to say,
On Sunday, gave power divine
Just to let my little light shine. (oh)
This little light of mine,
I'm going to let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm going to let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm going to let it shine,
Ev'ry day, ev'ry day,
Ev'ry day, ev'ry day,
Gonna let my little light shine.
Now some say you got to run and hide.
But we say there's no place to hide.
And some say let others decide,
But we say let the people decide.
Some say the time's not right,
But we say the time's just right.
If there's a dark corner in our land,
You got to let your little light shine. (oh)
Repeat refrain.
Recorded by a variety of gospel artists. Midi files available online.

Zacchaeus Was a Wee Little Man
Zacchaeus was a wee little man
A wee little man was he.
He climbed up into a sycamore tree
For the Lord he wanted to see.
And as the Saviour passed that way
He looked up in the tree.
And He said, “Zacchaeus, you come down!”
“For I’m coming to your house today.”
“I’m coming to your house today.”
