Last week while sitting in my comfy clothes and flicking through the channels I happened upon a wonderful little program offered up by W5 entitled “To Hell With Manners.” I was treated to various social experiments that highlighted that while we may have opposable thumbs, we really are not as high up on the evolutionary ladder as we might like to think. (No offence to the apes…really!)
Perhaps the biggest impact of this study, was the poor pregnant woman who was forced to ride the Toronto subway standing, while those around her pushed, shoved, and basically acted like she wasn’t there. Come on people! City living or the country life, there just isn’t any excuse for this kind of behavior.
We can blame technology, we can blame our busy lifestyles, we can blame the other people who treat us the same way, or we can stop making excuses and get human again!
Resolve to do away with your cell phone for a week. Resolve to stop chatting and start really talking again. Resolve to say please and thank you. Resolve to appreciate and show gratitude for a change. Resolve to evolve! We have spent so much time bragging up the fact that we’re human beings that we have forgotten the part about being human!
We are blessed with wonderful traits and attributes that place us higher on that ladder, but so many of us have lost touch with them. Compassion, empathy, caring, sharing, love, and so many others that make us human beings. Perhaps the most important trait we have is that little twist in your gut you get when you KNOW what you should do…but you don’t do it. Let’s get back in touch with that. In this generation of “SELF” we have forgotten that the most important part of ourselves is the ability to help others.
In grade school we are taught the ever popular T.E.A.M concept. In our working environments we see it plastered all over our lunch room walls. Together Everyone Achieves More. Wonder what would happen if we applied it on a global level? Hopefully that’s something worth thinking about.
