Lt. Mara Lynn Sturm and Orson Howard Fitzgerald Madigan III, the lady trooper and the software billionaire are morbidly sentimental, devoted to each other, fearing separation more than death - maybe that is an exaggeration, but they are somewhat contentious and cantankerous with each other at times as well. This is how I developed their relationship.
Mara and Orson, the main protagonists in 'Freckles' are two lonely individuals at the beginning, subconciously looking for a long lost love. They meet with no idea that they were the actual lost counterpart of the other, though they note some familiarity about each other that neither person can put their finger on. All they know is that they can finish each others sentences and undress each other in 30 seconds. They burned for each other in a way that could be described as pathetic, they could also lock horns and get vocal, but keeping it open and honest, resolving disagreements 'before the Sun set' as Mara would say it. The song "Love is Strange", a 1956 chart topper by Mickey and Sylvia would be a good theme for Mara and Orson. It also recalls a Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek vehicle "Badlands" where a teenage couple, loosely based on Caril Ann Fugate and Richard Starkweather, goes on a rampage across the midwest. A bit of this Fugate and Starkweather darkness inhabits the passionate Mara and Orson, to the point where they conciously dress like them, when they take their Deuce Roadster for a long drive, Mara, with a scarf on her head chugging a bottle of Pepsi and Orson, pomaded hair combed back, punky 1950's sunglasses with a fake tortoiseshell top band (sported by Richard Starkweather in 1959 photos shortly after his capture). 'Cute' couples can have a dark side, Bonnie and Clyde another prime example. However, our couple has good intentions and are productive to society. They have to be extraordinarily tough for what is waiting for them. When the realization comes that they were that girl and boy that met on the beach in 1963, they lose their fear of the unknown and feel invincible as a team against evil. They weren't prepared however, for the fiery hell that forged them into the team that will go on to fight for the world's oceans and other environmental causes. In future installments, this couple, a throwback to the 1950's, a Ma and Pa Kettle in SCUBA gear, with the help of friends and an angel named Gabe, will get the job done - then they will 'get it on'.
