SYNOPSIS:
In 1955, SERAPHINA, a mysteriously beautiful Irish woman with a mystical persona and haunted past, arrives at the home of JOSEPH HOLSTEAD in Hinsdale, Massachusetts. Joseph’s wife recently passed away and he and his three young children suffer deeply from the terrible loss. Struggling desperately to maintain his work and the household, Joseph welcomes Seraphina as the family’s nanny and housekeeper.
The family soon grows fond of Seraphina’s pleasant Irish manner, and her tender care of the young children helps bring the family together. However, GRAMPA, a bitter man who has lost his faith, does not take kindly to Seraphina’s arrival. He resents her presence and remains secluded on his small ranch away from everyone. And grampa also detects something about Seraphina that she may be hiding.
Out of Seraphina’s tumultuous past comes GABRIEL, the son of a fanatical preacher, who blames her for the death of his father. His hate for Seraphina so deep he massacres several people in a road-side diner believing one of them to be Seraphina. He searches her out from city-to-city, year-after-year, desperate for revenge. Absolutely nothing will prevent him from killing Seraphina.
Meanwhile, GRACIE, Hinsdale’s wealthiest resident and local gossip, questions Seraphina’s surprising arrival, and undergoes a personal investigation into her past. But Gracie also has ulterior motives to torment Seraphina. Soon, ugly; vile rumors begin to spread, assaulting Seraphina’s integrity and personal honor. As the rumors continue the Holstead family and Seraphina suffer the pangs of small-town New England’s puritanical conjecture.
Seraphina recalls moments in her tormented past when similar rumors and accusations attacked a family she once worked for, and death and destruction soon followed. And now the rumors grow in their severity, and Joseph’s children become the brunt of the town’s misguided hate and disdain for Seraphina. Then a crisis strikes grampa; a personal event that only Seraphina can possibly manage. But she must make a vital decision, one of life and death… possibly her own.
Fed up with the angry gossip, Joseph becomes outraged and publicly lambastes those that would attempt to destroy his family and Seraphina. Suddenly, Gabriel strikes; exacting his revenge. Two individuals lay dead, while Seraphina and Joseph are dying in the hospital. Joseph is in a deep coma; his life close to its end when Seraphina, weak and dying herself, goes to Joseph’s room to be with him to the end. Within minutes, Seraphina is found slumped across Joseph’s body… dead.
On Christmas Eve, the children huddle together in their home with grampa, mourning the tragedy and praying for the life of their father. But what later occurs on that special Christmas Eve, long ago, is something only God can possibly understand.
