America’s animal shelters are now all overflowing with abandoned, left behind dogs and cats, of all sizes, ages, breeds, and personalities. And, with our truly abysmal economy, their horrendous plight won’t be getting any better, for a very long time to come.
And, the thousands of homeless senior dogs and cats today have it the worst of all – they very rarely get adopted or ever find loving new homes. Far too many of them are euthanized, because no one wants them.
In an effort to help these numerous older pets, the ASPCA and Petfinder.com have designated the month of November as ‘Adopt A Senior’ Month.
Here are 10 reasons to consider adopting an adorable senior dog this month, courtesy of Petfinder.com:
1. When senior dogs are adopted, they seem to understand that they’ve been given a second chance at life, and they are all the more thankful for it.
2. A senior dog’s personality has already developed, so you’ll know if he or she is a good fit for your family.
3. You Can teach an old dog new tricks. Senior dogs have the attention span and impulse control that makes them easier to train than their youthful counterparts.
4. A senior dog may very well already know basic commands anyway.
5. In particular, senior dogs are often already house trained.
6. A senior dog won’t grow any larger, so you’ll know exactly how much dog you’re getting.
7. Senior dogs are often content to just relax in your company, unlike younger dogs, who may get into mischief because they’re bored.
8. Speaking of relaxing, senior dogs make great napping buddies.
9. Senior dogs know that chew toys, not shoes, are for chewing.
10. Senior pets are some of the hardest to find homes for, so when you adopt a senior dog, you are truly saving a precious life.
