Why Censor Intelligent Design?

The author defends the notion that all concepts of origins should be presented in our classrooms as dictated by where the science leads us.

The level of misinformation coming from pundits is staggering. Editorials, which masquerade as a reporting of scientific fact, misrepresent the history and purpose of “science.” The current debate concerning the teaching of “Intelligent Design” in the classroom has sent Darwin’s apologists scrambling. They state that the concept of a creator or designer has no place in the science classroom because classroom instruction should only involve the “provable facts.” By that standard, evolution could no longer be taught in the classroom either. In fact, most of science is based upon hypothesis and theory. If we eliminate everything except the “provable facts,” scientific discovery would come to an end. The Scientific Method involves creating in a lab observable conditions from which conclusions can be drawn. By that definition, we will never be able to “prove” the theories of evolution or intelligent design. Natural selection doesn’t involve a scientist, which would be an intelligent designer, and, of course, we will never be able to put God in a test tube to witness creation. Basically, when it comes to origins, speculation and interpretation of various facts and discoveries is all that we have. What is wrong with allowing teachers the right to suggest when a certain discovery points towards natural selection and when a certain discovery points towards an intelligent designer? Do the atheists fear open discussion so much that ideas must be censored if they do not support Darwinian Theory?

Atheists attempt to make the terms “evolution” and “science” synonymous, while relegating the concept of a designer as only “religious.” They insist on calling it the “science of evolution” instead of the “theory of evolution” as though saying it over and over will make it so. The reason the majority of the people on this planet believe in an intelligent designer is because science has not yet been able to convince us of anything else. In fact, science tends to reveal just the opposite. The fossil record supports intelligent design more than Darwin’s “Tree of Life.”  The Big Bang Theory of cosmology is consistent with intelligent design. People are not stupid. It will take more than the assurance of atheists to convince us that living beings exist as a result of natural processes without the influence of an external agent.

Science is not the property of any school of thought. Science is an examination, interpretation, and application of facts. Why should atheists be the sole proprietors of what conclusions our children hear concerning those facts? Pundits write columns suggesting that the great mysteries of science would be forever lost in the hands of those who believe in a creator. A vast majority of the important discoveries of science have been made by Christian scientists. Included in this list are such notables as Johannes Kepler, Blaise Pascal, Michael Faraday, Gregor Mendel, and George Washington Carver. (Go to http://www.adherents.com/largecom/fam_christian_scientists.html for a longer list.)  The snobbery of the Darwinists is unfounded. Copernicus and Galileo are heroes of science, but even in the face of persecution by church leaders for their discoveries, they never forsook their faith in God. If the scientists and church leaders of the Middle Ages had consulted their Bible, they would have discovered the concept of a round earth. (Isaiah 40:22) Let the facts lead us where they lead us. Don’t prohibit the discovery of truth. Don’t censor “Intelligent Design,” which is a theory much older than Darwin’s theory of natural selection, simply because it might support what the vast majority of people in the world already believe: That there is a God!

Pastor Thompson:

I am somewhat in the middle of the continuum between a pravable theory and an abstract concept. You have made your case well in engaging the discussion on Intelligent Design. However, the scientific paradigm suggests that if a theory can not be proven in a human lab, therefore, it does not exist. Nevertheless, we will have to agree that the earth could not be self-created. There must be an intelligent designer, which we may never be able to prove. As humans, we have not learned to accept scientific limitations. Therefore, for anything to exist on planet earth, one must be able to prove it in a scientific lab. Between concrete evidence and abstract exploration, I find myself in the middle. In other words, like Blaise Pascal, I believe in a superior being that I am not able to define. Very engaging article!

I think the answer is very simple. There is no scientific proof for Intelligent Design - not even any proof it maybe might be possible. We can't teach unprovable or inprobable lessons in science class because that defies science. I wonder if you would consider teaching the wisdom of Harry Potter in science class as well. I can make the arguement that Harry Potter inspired others to write about him and produce the great book. That's the same proof the creationists have, and intelligent design is just a new name for the old game - perhaps disproving the intelligence portion of the statement in the first place. Let's keep religions teaching in the home or church and the schools alone, please. There is no proof or truth in your faith that compares to Darwin's theory no matter how you try to delude the facts. Accept your truth for what it is - your belief. Why can't that be enough for you?

to a certain degree, i do believe in censorship, but then it would be taking away the rights of some people who would otherwise want to speak their minds. now, we may not all agree, but there is a limit to free speech, especially if it spews hatred or filth. then that should be banned! good thoughts here, pastor; as always, very well done!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in tx., karen lynn. :(

To censor anything is a diatribe of indecency! I DO NOT BELIEVE IN CENSORSHIP! I am a Darwinist, a follower of Jung, and a firm Wiccan.

I am a Walton's fan. One such episode portrays the banning of Mein Kampf.(spelling?) These country folks caught wind of the Nazis burning American books, so in return, the preacher of Walton's Mountain called forth a meeting to burn German books. Unknown to him, one of the books he threw into the fire was the German Bible, which was quickly picked out of the fire by John Boy. John Boy asked if anyone knew how to read German. One lady, silent about her German heritage stepped up and read a passage where it was discovered the book was the German Bible. Thanks for saving the day here, Eddie Thompson. Great Essay!
