What you need to know to choose the right book publisher?

Choosing a book publisher is much like car shopping. What are some of the features you want a car to have? air conditioning, nice looking, great gas mileage, the right price. In searching for a book publisher most first time authors shop for a publisher like buying a car: what type? Are you looking for a fiction or non-fiction publishing house? Another question you might want to answer: “Do I want to pay to have it done, or am I looking for someone to pay me an advance and produce it?”

There are two types you will encounter in the marketplace: Vanity Press/Print-on-Demand and Traditional. More often when you do an internet search you will encounter the first one. With this type publisher you pay to have your book printed.

The traditional publisher requires the author to query first for interest and wait for their lead; if no takers you move on to the next one on your list. As far as the cost for the traditional publisher, if you know how to effectively prepare what is called a “query” letter and a book proposal, you will save yourself a minimum of $2500. The down side to that, you could spend that $2500 and still get rejected, plus the process can be very slow.

Based on experience, the fastest way to get into print is Vanity Press/ Print-on-Demand. That $2500 you would have spent to get to the traditional publisher, gets you into print faster, usually within 30-90 days, if your book is ready.

Deciding which book publisher is right for you begins with examining what each has to offer. Your choice depends upon how much work you want to do, or your budget for publishing. My observation and experience with the Vanity Press side, the volume of books may creates a storage issue, and you spend more than the  Print-on-Demand, which offers less books at an affordable price. The traditional publisher caters to writing skill, market appeal but may take a few years to get to the right hands.

The first time author can enhance the Vanity Press/Print-on-Demand selection by hiring an editor, or creative writer with some marketing skill to deliver a better quality product into the market.

Getting a book published today is easy. The vast amount of publishing advertising on the internet supports that. Making the choice right for you is based on what you want. Taking the time to understand how your options work will save you time, money and frustration.
