The Reunion of VMF-122 pilots from the early 1960s

It was the Officer's Club at the Navy Air Station in Pensacola, Florida. The men and their wives had arrived the night before, renewed friendships, toured the Aviation Museum and this day had viewed the Blue Angels with 150,000 other people. It was a fantastic show viewed by a group of Marines from the squadron in 1962. Not a one of them would have turned down an opportunity to be a Blue Angel if it had ever been offered to them.
After dinner, I spoke of the book I was writing, When My Husband Went to War in 1962, and the events leading up to the Cuban Missile Crisis in October of that year, intertwining their experiences with those of the world. In August the squadron qualified on the USS Intrepid. In September the government became concerned over increased shipments to Cuba from Russia, and we had our third baby. In October men from the squadron went to Key West to fly combat air patrol while the photoreconnaisance planes took photos of the missiles set up in our neighboring island nation.
Then I played Kennedy's speech of October 22, 1962, his words resonating with concern and confidence.
And afterwards I was asked questions and I did know the answers. Then they became very interested and added stories and experiences.
They are in my book. They are veterans of this ultimate war that didn't occur because of actions of world leaders and because our military were armed and ready for whatever mission they were given.
