Even animals can get down and funky.
So I am listening to Beausoleil on the way to work this morning when I observed a hitherto undocumented phenomena. I am certain it was undocumented because nobody else would have noticed this except an eccentric artist/writer driving down the road listening to Beausoleil who happens to be...me.
For those of you who are not familiar with Beausoleil, they are a jamming zydeco band. That is creole music that is ever so wonderful to dance to. As I am flying down Highway 20, I round a series of turns where a large flock of wild turkeys hangs out for their morning cup of joe and a breakfast sandwich (vegetarian, naturally - heavy on the sprouts).
My head is bopping along to the beat and I am car dancing - yes, hang your heads in shame, you do it, too - when I realized that the "turks" as we call them, are also dancing in perfect synch with the music. I mean perfect synch. "Oh chere bebe, prier pour moi...laissez mon ame dans les flammes d'enfer..." doo do do dadada la dee da. Yahoo! I slowed down a little and rolled down the window and let the music flow from the car - they did not skip a beat.
Perhaps it was because "Oh chere bebe" in Beausoleil speak sounds like "Who shot the pig." The pigs are up the road apiece, and the turks, in their wanderings, have probably hung out at chez cochon and chewed the fat, er, knocked back a few when nobody was looking. They probably even shared a few good laughs over the whole "who shot the pig" thing. Then again, the petit cochons have probably never heard the Beausoleil tune, "Cochon de Lait," dedicated to the milk pig contingency; and I doubt the turks would insult their hosts by letting on they had heard that one.
And as I drove on, I realized that birds in general are Beausoleil souls at heart. They jump and bop along to the rhythm of the zydeco band. Passing a herd of cows (no, not happy Cali cows - though they seemed to be having a good time in the warm weather) I noticed the calves gamboling to the beat as well. Pity there were no antelope out this morning or mule deer - I bet they hop to the beat as well.
So this phenomenon will never make it to the Discovery Channel - after they only report dark and heinous things like the deadly tidal waves, killer quakes and asteroids, and Yellowstone blowing up - but I recorded it in my mental DVR and will replay it often each time I listen to the big BS sound.
I also love Peruvian music. Really really love it. I think I will test the international flair o'turks manana. I will report the results.

| I believe you! My cats really groove to the Blues, and my mutts just cannot get enough of good old Country-Western, especially while we're tooling down the road in my truck! |
