The divide grows ever wider.
A coyote turned up over the past few days at a Colorado ski resort. Some people were privileged enough to get snapshots of the coyote before wildlife officials shot and killed it, allegedly for "snapping" at skiers. I have been disgusted with the callous disregard shown wild creatures, from horses to jerboas in the desert, but this takes it.
Here's some enlightenment: coyotes don't know what a ski resort is and, frankly, could care less how much people pay to visit one. The "snapping" alluded to is natural play behavior for these animals. How do I know?
When we lived in northern California, a runt coyote we called yasle (yashlay) was left behind to die. But she met our dogs Gina and Sapa and formed a fast friendship. I can't tell you how many games of in the bush, through the bush, and around the bush those three played and I would actually cry watching them because I had never seen anything so beautiful. We never fed her, she was just looking to socialize, nothing more.
And guess what Yasle did to Sapa to humble her and slow her down while they played? She nipped her heel sending Sapa tumbling ass over apple cart, but the game was still on. I suspect this ski resort coyote was almost full grown, and trying to play with the skiers closer to his or her size.
Is shooting an animal always the solution when people encroach on their territory? I guess it is. Here's a news flash: you want to live in the wild and vacation there? Learn your wildlife. There are cougars, bear, elk, deer, coyotes, badgers, wolverines, and other animals that are not always pleased to see you on their turf. Take the time to learn how to behave around them and you should be alright.
I really wish they had not destroyed that coyote so all that is left of him or her is a snapshot showing just how beautiful he or she...was.

| Excellent writing. However, incidents such as this, involving the killing of wildlife, tear my hear out. |
