We are living in turbulent times globally. Here in the U.S., the economy – well, all I can say it has not been this bad since the stock market crash of 1929. It was around this time that Golden Threads of prosperity became known with their lectures and their books. I have wanted to write about the Golden Threads of the first half of the last century for some time and kept putting off. Now is the time to share what I know about these fabulous people. The wisdom they taught is something that each of us can use and develop so that we do not have to have tough economic challenges or being out of work.
Four prosperity authors stood out over others during this period of the Great Depression. Florence Scovel Shinn's books are as valid today as they were then. Florence Scovel Shinn was born in 1871, and became an artist living in New York City. Somewhere she became a student of Unity. What she learned became the springboard for her lectures on the subjects of prosperity, happiness and health. She had married another artist and when he asked for a divorce, she brought herself out of her sorrow by becoming the author of short, easy to read books with titles of The Game of Life and How to Play It, Your Word is Your Wand, The Secret Door to Success, and The Power of the Spoken Word. These books are available today. She used short affirmations for just about anything. One of hers on prosperity is, I now release the gold-mine within me. I am linked with an endless golden stream of prosperity, which come to me in perfect ways.
Shinn was a great teacher and spawned others such as Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, the author of The Power of Positive Thinking. On the back of one of her books, is a statement from him. Possibly another student was Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich.
Another great prosperity author is Catherine Ponder. She has written numerous books on prosperity and healing. What I have noted about Ponder is that she uses every verse in the Old and New Testaments that deal with one's power for prosperity and for healing. I have applied many of her affirmations in her book The Dynamic Laws of Prosperity to my own life. Unfortunately, religions have suppressed the power of the mind in their flocks. She emphasizes to avoid hard times talk. She uses the word plenty at times instead of prosperous. The following is from her book, The Dynamic Laws of Prosperity.
The spiritual substance from which comes all visible wealth is never depleted. It is right with you all the time and responds to your faith in it and your demands upon it. It is not affected by our ignorant talk of hard times, though we are affected because our thoughts and words govern our demonstration. The unfailing resource is always ready to give. Pour your living words of faith into the omnipresent ethers and you will be prospered though all the banks in the world close their doors. Turn the great energy of your thinking upon "plenty" ideas and you will have plenty regardless of what people about you are saying or doing.
Neville Goddard is another Golden Thread whose books and teachings have helped many people all over the world. He was born in 1905 in Barbados. As a young man, he moved to New York and worked in department stores. He became interested in Rosicrucianism among other things. In his biography, it is written that "under unusual circumstances, he met a black Jew, named Abdullah, who lectured on Christianity. Neville went to hear him, somewhat under protest, to satisfy the constant urging of a friend, "Whose judgment I did not respect,” Neville said, "because he made such poor financial investments."
Neville said he was seated in the auditorium waiting for the lecture to begin, when the speaker - who had never met Neville, came down the aisle from the rear of the auditorium to the stage. "You are late, Neville!" Abdullah said, "six months' late! I have been told to expect you." From this introduction, Neville studied with Abdullah seven days a week for seven years. "Abdullah taught me Hebrew, he taught me The Kabbala, and he taught me more about real Christianity than anyone I ever met," Neville declared.
Much of his emphasis was placed on the use of the imagination and he taught, "Learn how to use your imaginal power, lovingly, on behalf of others, for Man is moving into a world where everything is subject to his/her imaginal power." I remember reading in one of his books about his own use of imagination. He needed to return to the U.S. from Barbados and did not have the money for returning by ship. He wrote that he sat down in a chair and began imagining him with a ticket in his hand and giving it to the agent as he boarded the ship. He saw himself on the ship and disembarking in New York. Once he was convinced of his imagination, he received a call from a friend telling him that he had a ticket on a ship leaving the following day for New York and it was Neville's if he wanted it. He knew he had created this. He lectured for many years in Los Angeles, California and passed in 1972.
This week I received an email about a woman who manifested $112 Million Dollars. The way in which she manifested this large sum is most interesting. According to the article: "Cynthia believed in creative visualization. She practiced the teachings of several books that were based around the law of attraction and positive thinking. One of her favorites was, "The Power of Your Subconscious Mind", by Dr. Joseph Murphy." I met Dr. Murphy in 1981 when I was living in Laguna Hills, California. He lived nearby in the retirement community Leisure World and on Sundays, he would lecture in a movie theater in the nearby community of El Toro. I had purchased his book along with other prosperity authors.
Dr. Joseph Murphy was a very learned man with initials after his name such as D.R.S., PhD, D.D., L.L.D. He was well acquainted with quantum physics. I can understand why Cynthia Stafford stated that he was her favorite prosperity author. I love one of his statements, "Poverty is a mental disease." His book The Power of Your Subconscious Mind is as valid today as it was in the last century. He stresses the subconscious mind and at times refers to infinite intelligence. From his book:
"Knowledge of the powers of your subconscious mind is the means to the royal road to riches of all kinds—spiritual, mental, or financial. The student of the laws of mind believes and knows definitely that regardless of economic situations, stock market fluctuation, depress, strikes, war, other conditions or circumstances, he/she will always be amply supplied, regardless of what form money takes. The reason for this is that he/she has conveyed the idea of wealth to her/his subconscious mind, and it keeps her/him supplied wherever he/she may be. She/he has convinced herself/himself in her/his mind that money is forever flowing freely in his/her life and that there is always a wonderful surplus. Should there be a financial collapse of government tomorrow and all the man's/woman's present holdings become valueless, as the German marks did after the First World War, he/she would still attract wealth and be care for, regardless of the form the new currency took."
These four prosperity teachers and authors helped to seed the consciousness of the people during the Great Depression and WWII. There are other authors who have written prosperity books and lectured however; from my perspective, the four I have written about are the most outstanding because they were not into lecturing for greed or for fame. They only wanted to share what they had learned and applied.
We do not have to be jobless, have our homes foreclosed or to be poor. Our greatest tool is our brain and our imagination. Know what you want and you can have it. Shakespeare wrote, All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances. From As You Like It.
From Joseph Murphy: "When fear knocks at the door of your mind, or when worry, anxiety and doubt cross your mind, behold your vision, your goal. Think of the infinite power within your subconscious mind, which you can generate by your thinking and imagining, and persevere, until the day breaks, and the shadows flee away. Other statements that Murphy has stated are, The solution lies within the problem. The answer is in every question."
