I am an old man and as such I have seen our nation developed and sadly it has not always shown this growth as maturity. My son, Dave and I have breakfast each morning before he goes off to work. This morning as we were having our bacon and eggs with O.J. we talked about the latest from our friends in Washington.

I mentioned that I am a democrat… at least I was, or maybe you could say I am a frustrated one.

Lately I find myself looking from one side to other and simply can’t say anymore.
Dave replied to this. He said, “It seems that neither is willing to give into the other.” Take the national debt. Everyone wants blame it on our president. Dave doesn’t agree and frankly neither do I. He is trying to help as many people as he can but congress has divided itself into two factions. Fighting over what you may ask? Anything they can. They seem more intent on winning than worrying about what winning really means. I get the impression that each side thinks compromise is bad. Let us look at the word ‘Compromise.’ Another word is cooperation, negotiation, concession and conciliation. If we keep looking we find the word settlement, arrangement, agreement and concession. That last word, my friends is the one the folks in congress seem to be the most afraid of. Why do we not look a little closer to that word? ‘Concession’… reduction, discount, allowance, markdown, and so on.
Before I run down the English dictionary let me simply say this. If I set a goal which I do not completely reach I must be man enough to admit I didn’t achieve one hundred percent but I should take comfort that I did achieve an achievement higher than from where I started. Furthermore I must be man enough to admit that the other side has a point to consider. In other words, ‘compromise is not always a bad thing. It is what has made our country great.
To get back to the national debt, out of the blue this morning Dave said this and he seemed to have it figured out mathematically.
“I wouldn’t mind so much if they raised my taxes if I thought they would use it to pay off the national debt and still take care of those who need help,” he said. “I could handle it.”
I was proud to hear him talk this way because this patriotic attitude is what made the U.S.A. a great nation
What bothers my son is the same thing that has bothered me for some time. Those men run passionately for a place in our government but I fear they work just as passionately to make themselves rulers rather than part of team of the people, by the people and for the people. What do you think?
