When you write a "road mystery" it helps if you've actually been to the places you're writing about.

Honeymoon for Three could also be called a “Road Mystery” because it takes place on the road—in a 1962 Volkswagen beetle. It’s a fictional travelogue that goes through some of the most beautiful places in the U.S.: Crater Lake, Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, the Tetons, Mt. Rainier, and ends up in a treacherous but magnificent spot on the California coast.

I was born to wander. I’m at my happiest when I’m out and about, even if it’s only my four-plus mile morning walk. My wife, who if anything has more wanderlust than I do, and I planned our honeymoon so that we’d see all the places listed above, driving guess what.

Of course, we aren’t Gary and Penny, the bride and groom in Honeymoon for Three. They are completely made up. (My wife made me say that.) In addition, we didn’t have a stalker with a bellybutton fetish following us on our honeymoon. Thank goodness. Alfred is enough to give any young couple nightmares.

We did, however, camp and hike in some of the great national parks, bathing ourselves in the beauty and wildness of the mountains, trees, lakes, geysers and animals. We saw the bighorn sheep, bears (grizzly and black), moose and elk. We watched Old Faithful being faithful and hiked over six miles up to a cold chalet in Glacier National Park from where we could see an infinite number of stars. We wondered if Mt. Rainier really existed. It never appeared while we were there.

We drove our trusty VW 5,000 miles and came home to work and a brand new apartment without a refrigerator. But first things first. We had just completed the trip of our lives.
