The battle continues on a recently adopted ordinance that targets illegal immigrants.

                                                12/1/2006

I was thumbing through one of my local newspapers earlier this evening and stopped when I came across one particular article. First I will back up a little to give some background.
On November 13 2006 one of the local towns near to where I live voted  to adopt a city ordinance with a short list targeting illegal immigrants. On the surface it seems simple enough, but when you look a little closer, you just have to ask yourself where the federal government is on this issue.

The city ordinance goes something like this:
              1. Landlords must show proof of citizenship
or residencey of their prospective tenants,
               2. Declare English as the official language.
               3. Allow the local police to apply to participate
                   in the federal program.

One could agree with this potential battle or disagree, but again, the question is really who is entitled and who is not. Right? Is anyone, from anywhere, entitled to settle in this country whenever they want? How much longer do you think we could sustain this type of invasion? A very close friend of mine has been trying to move here for seventeen years through legal channels and has all but given up.
My own family had to endure ridicule, humiliation, discrimination and  harrassment when they first arrived here and not all of them were given permission to stay.
Anyway, back to the article I was reading. I gather from the article they are planning to protest this decision and the Mayor had his house spray painted with "Viva Mexico" on one side. Why?  What is the purpose? Do these unfortunate illegal immigrants really believe they are entitled to do whatever they want?
I find it very amusing how illegal immigrants skip across our borders and begin demanding their rights. Did they demand their rights of their own government? I wonder?
I know the standard arguement is they are just looking for work. They are here to do the jobs the rest of us no longer want. What are the jobs we no longer want?
      Jobs like electrician, taxi driver,
landscaper, construction worker, lineman, painter? How long before other jobs are added to the list that we are no longer interest in? Jobs like teachers, doctors, lawyers, firemen, policemen, Congressmen,Senators?
Why are illegal immigrants entitled to run rampid through our country, while legal immigrants are put on a waiting list?
Anyone familiar with World History already knows that past Great Empires did not fall in a day.Right?

I'm new here so, I'm playing catch up. I'm truely bothered by the fact that illegals commit crimes, even murder, and get no more than deported and cross into our country again. That's so discusting, only US citizens have to pay for crimes. Why would they want equal rights?

Stay well and keep writing.

"Why are illegal immigrants entitled to run rampid through our country, while legal immigrants are put on a waiting list?"

Why indeed?

"They are here to do the jobs the rest of us no longer want. What are the jobs we no longer want?"

Just another ridiculous statement by upper class politicians trying to explain their inability to control the situation.

Good article, Karen. It also makes me wonder if my Native American ancestors felt the same when being invaded by the French, English, and Spanish. Not the same situation, but the emotional conflict and fear is the same.

It seems that a giant wall all along the border would be worth the trouble.
