I recently received a message from a police officer that reads my articles quite often, and he readily admits to me that rogue cops are a serious problem and seems to be increasing almost daily. He asked me an intriguing question the other day. He asked, “Of all the bad cops you’ve written about, who was #1 on my list for ruthlessness, totally unrepentant, and is or was a danger to society as a whole”? He wanted males only! I answered his question in about 5 seconds! It’s was a no brainer for me, Police Officer Daniel William Heirs. (another is Robert Melia, from Moorestown, New Jersey, google him later).
Believe it or not, many people out there still wish to turn a blind eye to police abuses and some even claim it’s not bad yet. They are in denial, and for the most part, I found them to be either rogue cops (not caught yet), the family of a bad cop, or the friends of bad cops. As a result, I often show them thousands of examples of bad cops (or they may simply take the short cut and google “police officer arrested”), but Daniel William Heirs is my number one example. (Oh, by the way, they say police abuses aren’t bad yet? Don’t you think that even one instance is bad enough?) Anyway, when I tell them about Daniel Heirs, they usually become grounded again, especially the ones that have children! Matter of fact, many of my present day supporters were people that originally contested the seriousness of my cry, and were finally convinced with the Daniel Heirs story.
Okay, lets begin. First a disclaimer. This guy is a fugitive but not arrested and convicted yet, so…he’s innocent until proven guilty. (even though in many states the law recognizes that if you fled, there is an assumption of guilt, they call that "consciousness" of guilt). Believe me I know, I went through that with the courts upon my surrender as a 22 fugitive. I regretted every year and oh, another thing, I was in fact guilty!
Anyway, imagine you are a sexual molester by nature, but your desire is really for young children. So you join the police department, matter of fact you work in three different jurisdictions until you land in the right place…as a community resource officer! You know, working around children! You maybe see this 10 year old child, the perfect victim. But you’re smart, very smart. You don’t engage her, but get to know the mother of the child. You essentially gain the mother’s trust (mothers listen). Then you strike by molesting the child and attempt to get her to keep the secret. After all, you’re a cop, no one is going to believe the little girl.
Police Officer Heirs is now charged by the South Carolina Police Department with molestation of a child, and unlawful flight to avoid persecution by the FBI and the U.S. Marshal’s Office. Matter of fact, he’s been placed on the U.S. Marshal’s 15 most wanted list (his picture is there, take a look and see if you recognize him). He was arrested November 24, 2004, five years so far as a federal fugitive. America's most wanted aired a segment of his crimes some time ago. He's actually on John Walsh's special "dirty dozen" list...the fugitives he wants to capture the most!
Okay, we don’t stop there though. He was suppose to surrender after the charges on March 15, 2005, after being officially charged by law enforcement. Yes surrender! You or I would have been arrested! Now you can understand why I’ve been lobbying for officers to be treated like us… jailed on the charge! This really yanks my chain! Instead they get desk duty, or suspended with pay, still able to commit other crimes.
Oh, that part about still able to commit other crimes? He did just that. Shortly before his surrender, he’s now charged with murdering his wife! His wife, the former Mrs. Ludimila Heirs, was found when they went to arrest him in their bedroom, with a gun shot to the head! Why did he shoot her? Who knows, but I can imagine that she was one very unhappy wife knowing that her husband like children, the lost of honor in their community, the embarrassment, not to mention the press coverage.
Notice this quote from the Director of the United States Marshal Service, Benigno Reyna, speaking about this cop and all bad cops, “it is especially abhorrent when individuals sworn to uphold the law commits such crimes”. So if many of you don’t agree with my assessment of a bad cop, maybe you agree if one of the top cops in the nation says it!
Also, to you honorable police officers and others in law enforcement...good job and godspeed!
(May I side step for a moment?... after many years of researching bad cops, I seem to be the only former cop that readily admits to being a bad cop 30 years ago and regretting it. Am I nuts or what? Oh well, I digress)
Anyway, if officer Heirs was originally arrested, Mrs. Heirs could possibly be alive today. Sorry for the redunduncy, but do you "really" see why I lobby for instant jail? We’re incarcerated but they’re not! We’re jailed until we can make bond! After all, what’s good for the goose…. So I rest my case. And if this case doesn’t upset you or cause great uneasiness, you’re probably a rogue cop, the family of a bad cop, or a friend of one! (man, I’m living dangerously huh. That guy could actually come after me. Oh well!) Be careful all and watch your children!
