No Puppy Mill Pups for Christmas, please

There are thousands and thousands of dogs and cats made homeless by the mortgage crisis. Think about a rescue as opposed to supporting a puppy mill.

We have had 5 dogs over the last twenty years that have come from rescue.  The greatest retriever we've ever known, Bosco, came from the pound.  He could catch a ball in the dark!  We also had Wilber, the bread thief, and Clayton the Great.  Clayton was a stubborn, arrogant brat in his youth, but a beloved friend and emotional therapist as he aged.

We now have Pete, who looks like a Great Dane or Irish wolfhound-lab mix.  Pete has grown up to be a sweet and loving guy after a very skittish few years of getting over life in a kennel.

After Clayton's passing, I decided I needed a smaller dog, one that wouldn't throw my back out if I had to carry him /her.  The result was the , blonde Nilla. We think she's cocker-bichon-poo.  She's very small--under 30pounds. I found her on the web site "Hearts for Hounds" and drove to Long Beach to let Pete meet her. She was a good match for our sweet  Pete, who has been without his best friend since Clayton died in June.  He thinks Nilla is a little crazy, but funny, and he likes her.

Nilla did great from the first night.  During the night, she jumped up on the bed as Pete does, wanted to sleep up on our pillows.  Patrick put her at the foot of the bed and she stayed there.  She took herself out this morning about 4--we sleep with the door opened (brrr, but Patrick is never too cold). Pete usually goes out about 6:30.

She is a sweet girl.  I talked to the rescue group this morning.  When this dog came into rescue, she was pregnant.  She had her pups, and they've all been placed.

Her brother is now adopted too.

Our walk this morning was fine.  Nilla is very good on her leash and thinks keeping up with the great hound Pete is fun!

Please, please everybody:  spay and neuter your animals, and when you need a pet, go to the pound or to a rescue group.  These animals have so much love to give.
