Discover a way to move forward and reach your goals in 2008.
Which of these statements best fits your thinking?
(A) I can do things differently, however the significant things about me cannot be altered.
(B) I can always change the important things about myself.
If the first statement (A) best fits your thinking, you have a fixed mind set. If the second statement (B) best fits your thinking, you have a growth mind set (Carol S. Dweck, PH.D., Mindset (c) 2006). As you enter the new year, consider which statement you will believe about yourself.
What do these statements tell you about yourself? Statement (A) allows you to make changes at a surface level. You set a goal to lose weight after the holidays. The goal may sound something like this: I will stop eating sweets for the next two weeks and lose the five pounds I gained during the holidays. You may or may not reach your goal. Statement (B) allows you to make changes at a deeper level. After the holidays your jeans feel too tight and so you make the following goal: I have decided that I want to live healthier on a daily basis. I will identify the steps I need to live healthier and each week focus on one good health habit to work on.
The mindset we have when setting new goals affects the manner in which we approach that goal. The mindset also significantly affects our success rate. In addition, having a life coach at your side also empowers you to accomplish your goal. A life coach helps you move forward and be diligent. A life coach assists you during the process of clarifying your goal, determining your action steps, and encouraging you along the journey. A key element to a life coaching relationship is the element of accountability.
If you are interested in reaching your goals, it does not matter if you answered the above question with response (A) or (B). What does matter is that you have a goal and want accountability. And, you have the opportunity to have a life coach. Take a step forward and discover a way to really live the life you desire during 2008.
