Tracking Kids With Technology

What do you need to help keep track of your kids? Consider these three resources.

A quote you may recall: Advances in computer technology and the Internet have changed the way America works, learns, and communicates.  The Internet has become an integral part of America's economic, political, and social life.  ~Bill Clinton.  The author neglected to include that technology is an integral part of parenting and education.  We as parents need to take advantage of the technology to better keep track of our kids.

Here are three tips of how to track your kids using technology.

1) Did you know you can keep track of your kids with a cell phone?  More than one cell phone company offers this feature.  I am going to tell you a little about the Verizon set up.  With today’s technology of GPS (Global Positioning System) you can identify where your child is with a special plan called the “Chaperone” plan.  Selected phones are required.  Yet, this technology is amazing to me.  You can visit the Verizon Wireless web site for more information.  So, as your teenager spreads his or her wings, track them with your cell phone!

2) Many school districts have implemented a grading program in which we as parents can access our students’ progress at the click of the button.  For any first grade through twelfth grade student, a website and access code is provided to parents to learn a child’s grades at any time of the parent’s convenience.  If you are unaware of this information, contact your school administration and ask about this possibility.  Now, your child cannot hide his academic accomplishments or challenges!

3) Schools are always adopting an updated technology oriented program.  For example, a new math program my school adopted has a web site for parents and students.  Your child has the opportunity to “play” on the computer math games specifically matched to the skills currently being learned in the classroom.  Also, when your child has home work and needs a math tool, the web site may also have fun interactive and easy to use tools for your child.  For example, the Macmillan/McGraw-Heath has a tool chest.  If your child needs to practice making patterns, a pattern block program allows the child to build and create on the computer screen.  As a parent, you can view what tools your child is using and see in a concrete way how well your child is learning.  This also allows you to ask your child questions and track how your child progresses.  This is the web site, MacMillan/McGraw-Hill, which you can see the example I have given.

For other school programs which may be designed like this one, contact your child’s teacher.  This is just one example.  Just think, you can take your child to a safe web site designed just for his or her learning level and have fun.

As we increase our understanding of learning, we can be more of the parent we desire for our children.  We can reach forward and make a difference one day at a time.  A quote to consider:  “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.  Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” (Margaret Mead)
