DURHAM, NC--December 20, 2008: A small but determined group of gay activists braved wind and light rain to hold a candle light vigil tonight and promote awareness of the gay marriage issue. The group held candles and a sign while standing on the corner across from the Southpoint Mall. Several cars honked in support and many other drivers read the sign while passing through on their way to the mall.
Although many of the members of the group were gay, people joined the cause for diverse reasons. Everyone involved in the group had a personal reason for fighting for gay rights, whether it be for themselves or someone they cared about.
The candle light vigil had been planned via Facebook. The wind and rain interfered with the candles, but the group laughed, searched for inventive ways to relight their candles, and went on with the demonstration, which lasted about an hour. Everyone went home encouraged by the camaderie in the group, and many plan to attend other events supporting gay marriage.
