Can Women With Epilepsy Have Babies

Did you know that women with epilepsy have fewer children than any other women?  Yet feeling insecure about ourselves is perhaps the most common drawbacks with women who have epilepsy.   Researchers think “Women with epilepsy have a higher rate of menstrual cycle irregularities and other gynecological problems that may interfere with fertility.”  This is not true.    More than 90% of women with epilepsy who choose to become pregnant have healthy babies.

Secondly, the reason for such a small amount of people with epilepsy having babies could be because of personal choice.  Having your first child brings out many fears because you do not know what to expect and is going to happen.  Women with epilepsy do have a greater risk of having a baby with certain kinds of birth defects.  The rate is 4 - 6% for women with epilepsy, compared with the rate of 2 - 3% in the general population.

In the past, they discouraged women with epilepsy from having children and sometimes were sterilized against their will to prevent pregnancy.  However, now the public’s understanding of epilepsy has grown, and the medical community has useful information to share with women who have seizures and want to become pregnant.

Epilepsy has not stopped me from having a two beautiful babies and a wonderful family.  I can be the best mother ever with epilepsy.  Epilepsy has not interfered with my life in any way shape of form.  To survive and live happily, you need to think positively and have faith, faith in yourself.

I can relate to this write because I too have two beautiful & healthy children, as well as two beautiful and healthy grandchildren. I also have form of epilepsy, my seizures began when I was thirteen and we have never found a reason for them even after undergoing extensive tests. I am on medication that I have taken since then, and have been able to decrease the amount over the years. But I was told in 1984 that my chances for a healthy baby were very slim by my family physician, I did not understand this because I had already given birth to my first child. I was even given the option of abortion...thankfully I had a good head on my shoulders and do not believe in abortions either. I told him that what was meant to be would be, if I was intended to have a child with some type of birth defects, then I would raise it and love it as much as a healthy child. That baby in question is now nearly 22 years old with a wonderful three year old....loved your article and will be checking back in more often...glad I stumbled upon your sight. Great writing.

Maybe it is because the woman is scared that she will pass epilepsy on to her unborn child, and she may not be able to help them lest she should happen to suffer a seizure. All these fears are understandable and justifiable! But glad that more women with epilepsy (such as yourself) ARE becoming pregnant and are raising children! Good for you!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your Tx., friend, Karen Lynn. :D
