Title in Progress 9/5/2010 4:15:13 PM Novel about an older woman finding her way in a foreign country, foreign language, and a culture still incomprehensible to her...the people she meets, and what they show her about living, relating to others, and learning to trust...God, other people, herself. Spiritual search in a practical life. Have just started a semi-autobiographical novel, or have started pulling it together from notes, short-story starts, dreams. I work on it in fits and starts; mid doubts, excitement, new insights, doubts again....
At least, from my last novel, I've learned to trust my way of working. That it's okay if each part isn't perfect...I can keep moving on, knowing that I will come back and massage it over and over again until it feels right. Maybe kneading is a better metaphor, making a novel like making bread....except with bread you don't have the advantage of tossing out parts even after they've been kneaded in, over and over again.
Working something until the dross is gone and only the shining parts remain.
