Words of Wisdom from a Cop's Daughter
1/21/2007 5:10:01 AM
Another obvious step to stay safe but not often remembered.
Here is another obvious step to stay safe which unfortunately is not often remembered.

Wherever you go, whomever you are with, remember to take notice of the things around you.
I can recall something my dad had taught me in my teeneage years when I first started going out to clubs and events with friends and on my own.
"Take notice of all the exit doors whenever you enter a building."
"Oh Dad, come on, what could happen?" I recall asking.
"Just remember to do it Laura."

He was right.
Every time I went out I checked to see where the exit doors were and told my friends to be aware as well. I recall taking it to the next level. I would establish a meeting place inside if everything was all right at the club and one outside if things weren't all right and everyone needed to exit the building quickly.
My friends moaned and groaned but I enforced the importance.
One night, my precautionary steps helped to save my friends and I from a sudden disturbance in a club.
A HUGE fight broke out, for no apparent reason at all, (of course)and this was a nice place, not some hole in the wall joint. Chairs werer flying, people were grabbing people and striking them for no reason. It was chaos and the bouncers at the place did not have any control. Anyway, everyone met outside at the location I had established. I can recall a couple of the girls apologizing for making fun of me and my precautionary rules.
I for one thanked my Dad for his tid bit of information, his one simple step that saved my friends and I, that warm summer night.
Remember: LOOK FOR THE EXIT DOORS!!! :)
