Book promotion is a whole lot harder than writing the darn book in the first place!

I never thought I'd want to write a blog. Good grief! As if I didn't have enough to do already meeting writing deadlines, traveling the countryside talking and signing books, and spending countless hours launching my new "baby" in grand style. Or at least as grand as my limited budget will allow.
But everyone -- editor, agent, fellow writers, family, friends -- all claimed that I was robbing the world of an opportunity to glimpse the inner workings of my author's mind. Now there was a scary thought if ever there was one!!!
Still, I finally caved in and promised to give the blog thing a try. Okay, if I'm going to do this, I'm going to speak the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. And the biggest, most bothersome truth on my "author's mind" right now, is the incredible, unbelievable, fantastic amount of time we writers have to expend on publicity! And I'm not even talking money here, just time. Time, I might add, NOT spent on writing. The undeniable truth, however, is that if you don't do the promo stuff, you don't get the next book contract. So here I am blowing off steam. (You know, it actually feels pretty good getting this off my chest!)
Mind you, now, all this publicity stuff doesn't just take time away from my next book, it also robs me of precious time spent with my family. Isn't family supposed to come first? In my mind it should. But just ask my husband Bob what he thinks about his wife's priorities right now, and I guarantee he'll give you an earful!
Even as I write this, the UPS man is at the door delivering three extremely heavy boxes filled with postcards for my new release, THE CLIFF HOUSE STRANGLER. You can guess what that means -- yup, hours and hours spent addressing, signing and stamping the above-mentioned cards, and getting them off in the mail so readers, bookstores and libraries know that Shirley Tallman is about to give birth to her latest baby, well, figuratively speaking, that is.
So, off I go to haul in the latest addition to my promo schedule. And try not to throw out my back in the process!
Visit me again sometime. Maybe I'll find this session so cathartic that I'll actually be motivated to write another entry in my first ever blog!
