Old Titles Are Titles Too 5/19/2009 2:04:38 AM Just wondering why most of our older works tend to be overlooked.
I love sharing my poetry and short fiction here on the Den. I want to thank all my friends and readers for the support and encouragement. I truly appreciate every minute spent and every word said - good or bad - about my writing. Every comment helps me to grow. Though I don't normally send a note of thanks to each of you, it is only because I have great difficulty keeping up with everyone's posts. It amazes me how many writers are able to write and spread their reviewing wings so frequently here in the Den. I swing by the Den when time permits, mostly in the middle of the night, since I work nights. Otherwise, I also need to juggle my full-time job, my full-time writing habits, and spend quality time with my handsome hubby and three playful mini-Dachshunds.
For those who "know" me, you have probably come to realize that I tend to be wordy in my reviews. I truly do aim for quality, not quantity, so if I offend anyone with my assumptions/insights, please send me a note. I just want you all to know that I appreciate the value in everything I read, and I'm honored that you share that part of you.
Having said that, I would like to wonder "aloud" about old titles. I love skimming through other author's work in search of hidden gold; treasures waiting to be read. After all, we write so others can read. And we read so others can write. Yet, there seems to be an usual trend on most writing sites, including the Den. Reviewers only tend to read authors' most recent works. Perhaps their way of keeping up with the pace? Probably. This is common practice for me when an author posts daily. It's the only way I can follow their work in a timely fashion. However, everyone has old titles, and they are gems waiting to sparkle. I hope some of you will join me when I vow to read more older works here in the Den. As much as I enjoy reading everyone's newest posts, I know that each of you has more to offer than the poems or stories you posted most recently. I've dipped into other writers' archives and found poems or stories without comments. So sad. I write what's in me to write, and I want to read what's in you to write. Hopefully some of you feel the same way.
On a side note, I want to wish George Carroll a speedy recovery. I hope he comes back to us safe and sound:) He is missed.
