Feelings and Writing 11/25/2009 10:39:47 AM Patrick's poem "Query" set me thinking .. . "I always knew looking back on the tears would make me laugh, but I never knew looking back on the laughs would make me cry."
I like this quotation because it reflects so much of what it feels like to sit and write.
A book that has helped me immensely with breaking through my outer reserve is "Courage and Craft" by Barbara Abercrombie.
Many of her exercises start with lists. That's wonderful because I am a list maker of the first degree.
The flow of ideas from the concrete on the list to the long-buried in our memories is amazing.
When in doubt or blocked, start a list! And don't be surprised by the emotions that well up as you write. Writing, to me, is a form of prayer.
