The "value to" writing/the writing "to speculate" 11/8/2008 8:21:19 AM I have to admit it. In a surge of vanity I decided to google myself last night. As I glanced through the many entries I came across Amazon.com and a list of books by J Peter Rothe. I entered the site and to my amazement, books that I had written ten years ago or so and for which customers paid $35.00 are now for sale at $180.00, $280.00, and yes $360.00. One of my books is classified as a collectible and priced accordingly. I was amazed, and totally puzzled. You see when I first decide to write a manuscript, cost and profit never enters my mind. I massage an important idea, research it, and explain it in an entertaining and hopefully creative style. By doing so I believe that I am creating something that may make a small corner of the world "just a little bit better". The books are accessible to people, my royalties are very low and my feeling of empowerment and personal fulfillment is high.
But never did I think that my books would become such a high priced commodity for profit speculation. Paying hundreds of dollars for my books places them out of the hands of the average reader, which is a shame. The books are now enshrined in a new meaning, which leaves me status enriched, financially even or poor (I receive no royalites for used books or books considered to be collectibles) and spritiually impoverished.
My new book "Driven to Kill" should be available in a week or so. It is already advertised on the Internet book seller sites. I received advanced copies. I think I will keep a number of them - in case I need retirement funds (just joking). They are likely to also increase in monetary value! Who would have thought it? Do I now consider my writings in terms of speculators buying them for profit? It leaves a sour taste. Where is the value?
