Squirrels Find a Tasty Treat

This year our two bushes of peonies--one white and one pink-- had a multitude of blossoms. We were looking forward to a good show. Many years we have had a good showing and then rain and wind came and destroyed them when the blooms were full out. This year, however, we had given them better support and we were hopeful for an excellent showing.
The red squirrels had other ideas. We had left the bird feeder filled with sunflower seeds out longer than usual this year because the black bear hadn't been around and he is our signal that it is time to remove the bird feeder. But the squirrels kept getting on the feeder so that the birds had no chance to get the seeds.
In addition to that, the squirrels discovered the sweet taste of peony blossoms. They began climbing up the bamboo supports we had made and biting off the buds until, over several days, half the opening blooms were on the ground. The red squirrels had simply dropped them to the ground and not even eaten them. Destroyed for no reason! How upsetting!
Next, they began moving to the pink blossoms and that was too much for us to take. We took in the bird feeder, bought some critter deterrent, and sprayed around the base of the plant. Result, no more visits from marauding squirrels, beautiful blossoms on what was left of the peony buds, and peace of mind and enjoyment of the lovely plants.
We have learned our lesson at last. If we are to see the peony blossoms in their glory, the bird feeder has to be taken in earlier than we did this year and we have to deter the squirrels from tasting this sweet treat.
