Milkweed

There is a meadow area beside our house. Many different wild flowers grow there at various times of the year.
At the moment, the Common Milkweed is growing there, tall and in abundance. The dusty-rose pompom-like flowers are at their peak and a sweet, delicate perfume fills the air and wafts into the house through the open windows.
The Common Milkweed flowers attract many butterflies and the Monarch butterflies like to lay their eggs on the leaves. Because the leaves are noxious, the larvae that feed on them have immunity from the birds. The birds will not eat them because of the poisonous effect from the leaves.
Even though I love the cultivated perennial garden that I have with its spectacular flowers, I find great delight from the wildflowers that grow throughout three seasons of the year in the meadows and roadsides in our area, from the tiny yellow violets, through the pretty blue-eyed grass, to the orange jewel weed from which the hummingbirds love to drink, and many others in between.
An added advantage to the meadow over the cultivated garden is that one doesn't have to weed the area, one can just enjoy nature's bounty.
If wildflower knowledge is new to you, take a walk on the wild side sometime and look at all the roadside and meadow have to offer. Take a wildflower guide and learn what God gives to us for free.
