James Rupe's Comments 8/4/2009 10:03:24 AM In 1942 the Manhattan project was established in a joint effort with Britain and Canada to outrun the German war machine in the development of a nuclear weapon, “weapons of mass destruction.” The atomic bomb was born out of this venture and later used to end the Pacific war with Japan.
The cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki bore the brunt of the deadliest munitions ever unleashed on the human race. A conservative estimate of two hundred thousand people lost their lives in just a moment of time. For the last sixty years the world has tried to forget that fateful day in August and the awesome destruction of this lethal attack. Unsuspecting civilians, including women and children, vanished in the fiery devastation. This is the character of “weapons of mass destruction” – they are not selective.
The memory of this event is still fresh in the minds of an elder generation who lived through this dreadful time in our history. Today’s young people are only vaguely familiar with the terrible destruction of this deadly power but the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki continue to lament warnings of future use and the unthinkable results of such decisions. Yet we continue to stockpile nuclear weaponry thousands of times more sophisticated and destructive than the atomic bombs used on Japan.
The world has become an increasingly dangerous place. Plagued by terrorist organizations, governed by madmen whose mentalities seem absent of any compassion for the sanctity of life, whose will it is to acquire and use nuclear power to achieve their own selfish ends.
Unfortunately our focus remains on non-life-threatening issues like economic burps that temporarily interrupt our superficial lifestyles and global warming that cannot distinguish between human abuse and the natural progression of earth cycles.
We truly may live on the eve of unthinkable terror committed against the United States if we continue to consider nuclear attack as an afterthought. Day of Vindication is a stirring story of how this potentiality may play out.
