Why Do People Hurt: Day 2 of 3. . . Guts! 10/12/2007 9:21:19 AM Dealing with 3 points in 3 days. Welcome to Day 2 of 3: Guts. (Part of the lecture collection, "Cynth'ya Speaks: It's YOUR New Day!) Well hopefully when you saw that the topic for Part II of "Why Do Popele Hurt" was "GUTS" you didn't envision the incinerator of a slaughterhouse. . . Hey, speaking of slaughterhouses, first I gotta share a story about my cousin Chuckie.
DAY 2 POINT 2: DEVELOPING YOUR SPIRIT.
His name was John Charles Wilson. He died at age 40 from a medical complication. We called him "Cousin Chuckie" way before that excuse of a horror movie was created. But back to my cousin...
Cousin Chuckie was LOADED of life, always playing antics as a child, but was quite profound. In fact, my late Grandmama Cooper called him "Papa" for short because when he'd talk it was as if he'd been here before. His sister Ruth Evelyn called him "The Philosopher." He was in my wedding, and I'll never forget him sporting that big ol' afro that was made him about 8 inches taller than his natural height.
Cousin Chuckie never got into much trouble, except when it came to marrying the wrong women--it caused him to attempt suicide once. Thank God the bullet missed, disfigured the right side of his face, but other than that, he was good to his kids, and good to his parents and siblings.
Chuckie used to work at a slaugherhouse. Someone he figured "it pays!" Because of that he acquired yet another nickname, "The Pig Meister!" But you know he never committed a crime, never ignored his mother, his sisters, brother, kids or anyone in his family. He was just glad to be here, realized what he could have missed if the bullet didn't, and lived life no longer feeling sorry for himself.
When Chuckie passed away years later, still at such a young age because of a seizure in his sleep, due to damage left by the bullet, it left sort of a numbing feeling because he was so young and we went to high school together. Memories rushed in, flash flooding my emotions.
Chuckie played a sousaphone and base drum in the high school band as I recollect. (I'm over 50 now so I do quite a bit of "recollecting" memories. . . goes with the territory of not being on the underside of a lawn.)
But what I do remember is when viewing Chuckie's "old house" --- as I like to call the body of a spirit that is still alive in another realm that I believe God has created, based on our deeds and our faith---It was as if he was just in a resting state and the spirit had just said to the rest of us, "Thanks for coming to my earthly retirement party."
The spirit inside Cousin Chuckie, as I recollect, (for that spirit is still living somewhere, I believe in a very special place) has lessons he is probably sharing with other spirits. He left his "guts" behind physically, but what made Cousin Chuckie special is the fact that he spoke exactly what was on his heart, regardless of what people thought. Yet at the SAME time he was always sensitive to the thoughts of others. I think that's what makes the difference.
So the moral of today's topic (GUTS) is that whatever we put inside of our minds, spirits and hearts is what we remember about an individual. What we say, the things we put into our own minds about our abilities or lack of, are what people tend to recall. If there was sadness, despair and frustration, then that is the shadow of the spirit that is left behind with those of us who knew, or knew of, the departed spirit form.
Although I believe that we will all rise again at the coming of Jesus Christ based on what MY bible tells ME (I preach to noone regardless of what my mother says), it is good to know that as we meet people day by day, regardless of the time or purpose of our meeting, that we leave part of our breath with them just from having said "hello" or "goodbye."
In conclusion, the next time you watch a Gatorade or whatever that commmercial is on tv (which I don't watch a lot of but am held captive by when it comes to the Travel Channel and various PBS documentaries--and Frazier--just know that the things that come out of you are all predicated upon the things that you instill within you.
Truly, we are who we hang around, so hang around good books, good friends, and people who will tell you the truth to develop the best within your spirit. If your spirit hurts, ask yourself, "What's in me, and how can I change it?
Have a GOOD day, because it's YOUR New Day! I'll be back God willing with Day 3 next week with the final addition of "Why Do People Hurt."
blessin's
